    • What’s in a word?

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on August 22, 2017
I have to admit that sometimes, I have allowed things fly out of my mouth without engaging my brain first. In Proverbs 10, I read that I must carefully guard the words that come out of my mouth because of the impact they have on others – especially those people who are closest to me.
“The words of a good person give life, like a fountain of water, but the words of the wicked contain nothing but violence.” Proverbs 10:11 (NCV)
      Isn’t that the truth?
Have you had someone zap the life right out of you simply by the words they said? It’s like the words roll off their tongue and cut you off at the ankles.  I know I have felt belittled and unloved at the expense of someone else’s words. Sometimes I have allowed unkind words to hinder my walk with Christ. I have been so enraged at the words of another that I have held anger and bitterness in my heart towards the person who said them. But this isn’t what Jesus wants for us. He doesn’t want us “holding onto” bitterness and anger.
The book of James tells us that the tongue is the smallest part of our body (James 3:5) but it makes the greatest impact. Isn’t that the truth! The impact of our words can be used for building people up or tearing people down.
In Proverbs 10, Solomon tells us the positive aspects of the words we say:
      ·         Proverbs 10:13 – “smart people speak wisely”
      ·         Proverbs 10:20 – “their words are like pure silver”
      ·         Proverbs 10:21 – “they will help many others”
Where does wisdom come from? Wisdom comes from the One who spoke life into us, our loving Father. Reading Proverb 10 has challenged me to look inward and ask myself a few questions:
      ·         How am I using my words?
      ·         Do I speak words that will build others up (Eph. 4:29)
      ·         Do I tear people down with my words?
It is up to me to watch my tongue. The power it has can either positively or negatively impact those around me.
Today I choose to be more mindful of the words I use. I am committed to having a positive impact by the words I speak…what about you?

    • What does ‘worship’ mean to you?

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on August 21, 2017
Mark 14:3 (GW) Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had suffered from a skin disease. While Jesus was sitting there, a woman went to him. She had a bottle [an alabaster jar] of very expensive perfume [approximately worth a year’s wages] made from pure nard. She opened the bottle and poured the perfume on his head.
When you think of the word worship what comes to mind? Years ago when I first heard the word, I thought about the praise and worship songs we sing in our Sunday morning church services. I now know the act of worship is so much more. We worship God through song, our talent, our giving, our service to others, and by the life we live.
To get an accurate definition of the word worship, I went online to the 1828 edition of Webster’s American Dictionary of the English Language.  This dictionary was the first American dictionary written. Noah Webster, a master linguist, understood the power of words and their definitions and the need for precise word usage in communication to maintain independence. He used the Bible as the foundation for his definitions. [This dictionary can be found online at: http://1828.mshaffer.com/]
Worship (Verb) To adore; to pay divine honors to; to reverence with supreme respect and veneration.
Pondering this definition,  I couldn’t help but think of a two specific examples of women who worshiped Jesus while he walked this earth. The first example is Mary of Bethany. She worshiped Jesus by anointing and wiping his feet with her hair (John 12:3). She didn’t care if she used an expensive jar of perfume that could be sold for one year’s salary. She regarded Jesus with utmost love, respect, and devotion and was willing to sacrifice something of value. She also worshiped him by giving of her time. During a visit to her home, Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and learned from him instead of busying herself with the work that came with entertaining a guest (Luke 10:38-41). How I love the example Mary of Bethany sets for all of us to worship and adore Jesus with our time and best we have to offer.
The second example is found in Mark 12:41 – 44. It’s the story is told of an impoverished woman putting two copper coins into the temple treasury. Jesus saw her act of worship and used it to teach his disciples (and all of us) a valuable lesson. The gift this woman left was a true sacrifice on her part because she gave out of her poverty, not out of her abundance. She gave all she had because she understood giving was a form of worship. By giving these two small coins, she was demonstrating her trust in God to meet her every need.
So, other than singing praise and worship songs, how do you choose to worship the Father? Does Jesus receive your highest adoration and supreme respect every day? Do you start your day with Him and worship Him for who He is and the things He’s doing in your life? Or are you giving your highest honor to other things like the TV, laptops, iPods/iPads, friends, family, work, etc.
May I encourage you today to worship God by giving Him your best; your highest praise.

    • Praying through my circumstances

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on August 20, 2017
Isaiah 55:6 Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near.
Prayer is an essential tool for every Christ follower to develop and incorporate into their daily walk.  It’s the way we communication with the God who spoke the entire world into existence. WOW… just think about that for a second…the God of the universe cares about the details of my circumstances. Mind blowing isn’t it? With everything going on in the world you would think He would have more important things to pay attention to than the details of my day. But the daily reading of His word I’m reminded that He does care and He wants very deeply for me (and you) to know Him the way that He knows me.
When I first started to follow Christ as an adult, I found myself praying more for help from him than anything else. Sometimes all I could manage to get out was “God help…please.” Have you ever felt like that?
The truth is – we can talk to God just like we talk to one of our friends or family members during the good and bad times of our day. My prayer life has grown so much stronger over the past few years and God has moved in miraculous ways in my life. My prayer time now is not confined to one time and one place; I talk to God throughout the day. It’s just me and Him facing the day together.
He wants us to trust him and to feel like we can come to Him with ANYTHING. His shoulders are big enough to handle the toughest fight of our lives and nothing is too minor for Him listen. I know He’s with me, walking beside me every step of my day. He is waiting for me to open up and share the most intimate details of my life with Him. He wants me to talk about what bothers me and what makes me happy throughout the day. It’s not like He doesn’t know what’s going on already…He knows and He cares. He’s just waiting for me to include Him in the conversation.
Through this type of communication, I have become more thankful for the little things He has given me. I praise Him throughout the day for the beauty I see around me. I also pray for people I don’t even know in the cars beside me as I drive or those standing in line at the grocery store.
The next time you have a decision to make or you’re having a bad day, instead of reaching for the phone to unload on a friend, spend some time just talking to Jesus. He is a friend like no other. He will never put you on hold or have to “call you back” because one of the kids flushed something down the toilet or the dog just chewed up your favorite throw pillow. He is always available and always has the right answer… it might not be the answer or in the timing you think want…but remember He sees the big picture of your life.
      Proverbs 3:5 – 6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
