    • Well, it is a simple question…

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on September 12, 2017
Matthew 7:7 (NIV) “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

I love it how my son reminds me of the fun way my Dad taught us (me and my sister) the words to Matthew 7:7. The “lesson” started when I was 6 or 7 years old and still continues to this day… 43 years later.

This past winter we were “snowed” in by a winter storm that hit the entire east coast . My area got between 9 and 10 inches of snow…VERY uncommon for this area. Anyway, on this particular morning my son was getting in some target practice with his Nerf gun. He’d take aim at the refrigerator, the oven, the microwave, etc. and then pull the trigger letting the Nerf bullet rip. When the cartridge holding about 15 of these little Nerf bullets was empty, he called out “Mom, where are my bullets?” I hadn’t even been in the kitchen where he was shooting. How should I know where his bullets had flown off to? This question triggered the memory of my childhood and my search for shoes, books, brushes, etc.

When I was younger, whenever I’d say “Dad, where are my shoes?” His response would almost always be “Matthew 7:7.” Now I have to tell you that being in church nearly every Sunday and Wednesday since I was 7 days old, I recognized right away that Matthew was one of the Bible’s New Testament books and the 7:7 referenced the chapter number and verse location. Needless to say this answer from my father would send me huffing and puffing back into my room to sulk. I look back on it all now and have to laugh.

When the words “Mom, where are my bullets?” came out of my son’s mouth, I really wanted to say “Matthew 7:7.” But I savored the memory of those moments with my Dad. Just to let you in on a little secret…I have started shouting out “Matthew 7:7” more and more lately as I’m asked “Where is my notebook?” or “Where is my iPad?” Funny how he gives me the same exact response I gave my dad all those years ago.

In my quiet moments with the Lord this morning, I went back to Matthew 7:7. These words were spoken by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. My study this morning focused on the word “seek.”

The Greek word for seek is zēteō which means:  to seek or strive after, endeavor, to desire

The question I asked myself this morning was: “Do I desire or strive after seeking God and his plan for my life on a daily basis?”

Tough question for me to answer. I’d like to say I do…but sometimes I get overwhelmed by the stuff of my day and my quiet moments with the Lord get pushed to the side. If my desire is to wholeheartedly seeking Him, He should be the ONE thing I am not allowing to slip.

This year, I’ve made a commitment to wholeheartedly SEEK first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). I can’t wait to see what see what God will do in my life as I earnestly seek Him in everything I do.

Will you join me on this journey of SEEKING God first? Commit to give God the first and best of your day. Read your Bible, pray throughout the day about everything, and journal what you are feeling the Lord is saying to you.

“May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who long for your saving help always say, “The Lord is great!” (Psalm 70:4)

    • You ARE lovable!

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on September 11, 2017

Ephesians 3:18 – 19 (NCV) “And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love—how wide and how long and how high and how deep that love is. Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with the fullness of God.”

Have you ever felt unloved by someone? You feel as if the person who is supposed to love you most (a friend, a parent, a spouse) could care less whether you live or die. Perhaps these feelings have gone on for years or just a few days, but it really doesn’t matter they are eating you alive. The voice in your head (which you must know is Satan himself) tells you that no one loves you and as a result you retreat  into a deep dark pit of despair and loneliness.

Please hear me when I say – the voice in your head is not the voice of truth! The voice of truth does not bring condemnation or words of hate. The voice of truth speaks words of love and encouragement.

In Ephesians chapter 3, Paul is writing to the church at Ephesus and wants them to know and understand the greatness of Christ’s love. Christ’s love is long; it stretches the length of our entire life. He loves with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). Christ’s love is deep; it reaches down into to the pit of our despair and rises us up to soar on wings like eagles (Isaiah 40:31). Christ’s love is wide; it covers the breadth of our own experience and reaches out to the entire world. Christ’s love is high; it rises to heights of our celebration and so much higher than we can ever dare to dream or imagine.

The next time you feel like you are unloved just remember that the God of the entire universe loves you and wants you to feel safe and secure in that love. To prove it, he sent his one and only Son to die so that you didn’t have to (John 3:16). There is absolutely nothing that will ever separate us from his love.

      Isaiah 54:19, Jeremiah 31:3, 1 John 4:16, Romans 8:35-39

    • Weekend Reflection – Idol Worship

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on September 9, 2017

Here’s a question I want to throw out there as we start our weekend reflection.

Do you think the church reflects culture or does the culture reflects the church?

Each week I attend a bible study with men and women from my church.  One week the question above was thrown out and the consensus of the group was unanimous. Sadly, we all thought that more and more churches are reflecting the surrounding culture.

Did you know the same was true in Pergamum (Rev. 2:12-17). Yep that’s right. The church as a whole had become lenient to the surrounding culture of idol worship. While there were believers who remained faithful to Christ no matter what was going on around them, some tolerated those who led people away from God.

Idol worship? I know what you may be thinking, “We don’t worship idols today so how does this apply to the church in present day society?”

When God gave the 10 Commandments to Moses the first one He gave was “You shall not have any gods (idols) before me.” (Exodus 20:3/NIV) In fact, he emphasized it more than the other 9 by giving a consequence for disobedience and a blessing for obedience. “You must not worship or serve any idol, because I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. If you hate me, I will punish your children, and even your grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But I show kindness to thousands who love me and obey my commands.”

You might think “Ok that’s easy I don’t have a golden calf or a little wooden idol laying around anywhere so I’m good on that one.” But wait just a minute… you have to really think about this one. A “god” (idol) is anything in your life on which you place the highest value. For example: Instead of giving God the first part of your day so you can be in His presence, you sleep until the last possible minute, watch the morning news, go to the gym, do a little light cleaning from the night before, or read the paper with your morning cup of coffee. Are any of those things bad? No, but you have just placed a higher value on your morning “routine” than spending a few minutes alone with God.

Ok, I realize the questions that must be popping up in your minds: I don’t read the paper, drink coffee, sleep in, or watch TV in the morning. How is this relevant? Actually the list is endless. But let’s look at this from a different angle. What about your career, your service to the church, your friends, your family, your children, a hobby? Again, I’m not saying these things are bad; what I am trying to convey is, if we let them take our focus off God we have just made them an idol.

Anything we concentrate on too much for personal identity, meaning, and security becomes a god. YIKES! “But I didn’t intend to make them a god!” Yeah, I hear ya. But the amount of time we devote to them can “elevate” any of the things listed in the previous paragraph to “god” status when we allow them to control our thoughts and/or energies.

Take a look at our nation… we have become so lenient to the current culture. We are “accepting” (or becoming tolerant of) what God has said is unacceptable. God was clear in His command “You must not have any gods before me (NCV).” We must not. This doesn’t sound like a suggestion to me. According to the scripture in Exodus, if we don’t repent and turn from the idols in our lives, God will punish our children, their children, and their children’s children.

create in me a clean heart

      Time to reflect:

So this weekend, I just want us to spend some time taking an assessment of what we are placing our highest value on. Are there any idols in your life that you need to tear down? Or maybe you should look at the question this way: Is there anything in your life you are placing above your relationship with God?  If there is: Is that “idol” really worth God’s consequences?

I think for me, I’d rather have the blessings.
