    • Pushing through the pain

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on September 19, 2018

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (MSG) “So we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever.”

How many times in your life have you felt like throwing in the towel? Perhaps it is a situation in your relationship that is really getting out of hand and you just can’t seem to manage it any longer. Or, is it the stress level at work? What about something with your finances, are you cutting the “fat” in your budget and you still can’t make ends meet? It’s like every fiber in your being wants to throw your hands up in the air and scream at the top of your lungs “I can’t take this anymore, I give up!” If this is where you are…believe me, I completely understand and know exactly how you feel. I have been in each of these places a time or two…and it’s really not fun at all.

But, as tough as situations may seem at times and, as tough as what I am about to write may be hard to read, I feel I must share it with you. Life is temporary. I will say it again just in case you missed that…  LIFE IS TEMPORARY. We are only here on this earth for a little while. These three words might be a little tough to swallow because right now, at this moment, it may see whatever it is you’re walking through is taking an eternity to overcome. I promise… it’s not.

There is all of eternity to gain if we look at this world through a temporal view. If you read through Paul journey in the book of Acts (beginning in chapter 9) and the epistles he wrote, you will see that he suffered great trials and distress as he preached the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout his known world. Paul didn’t let the trials or circumstances of his situation to stop or deter him at all. Why? Because Paul understood the truth…his rest and reward were in heaven.

I admire Paul’s strength and perseverance! All too often when we face problems of any sort it’s easy to focus on the problem (or the pain it’s causing) instead of looking at what’s on the other side. Paul knew he needed to draw his strength from the power of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 3:16) to push through times of trials, pain, and suffering.

We never know what God will bring out of our deepest suffering or greatest trial. But I do know what His word promises in Romans 8:28 (NCV)

“We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love him. They are the people he called, because that was his plan.”

Did you catch the word EVERYTHING?  This means God will use every experience, every heartache, every trial, every mountaintop…EVERYTHING…for our good.

    • Learning obedience through the “tuff stuff” of life

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on April 27, 2018

Hebrews 5:7 – 8 (HCSB)  During His earthly life, He offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the One who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence. Though He was God’s Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered.

Have you ever been in crisis and called out to the Lord, only to feel He didn’t hear you? You make your plea “Lord why is this happening to me? Why is my marriage failing? Why is my child raging? Why am I slowly dying of this incurable disease? Why did I lose my job?”  I know I have made these types of cries to the Lord and have felt at times that He’s just wasn’t listening. At times like these, I have often wondered why the God of the universe wouldn’t answer my prayer in that moment…but what if He did answer?

When Jesus walked this earth, he also faced similar circumstances. He stepped out of his perfect heaven, emptied himself (Philippians 2:7) and took on the form of a human. Why? To show us how to live, treat others, and most importantly be obedient to the will of God even if it’s not the path he would have chosen for himself. In Matthew 26:39 we see Jesus crying out to his Father “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will [emphasis mine], but as You will.”

Jesus showed us how to be completely obedient even when he was staring death in the face. He could have called 10,000 angels to spare him the pain and anguish… but he didn’t. Obedience to the Father was more important to him than his comfort. He knew God had a plan for his life and he had to walk in that plan. God knew what was on the other side of the cross.

God knows what’s on the other side of our crisis as well. He knows the plans He has for us. Just look at what He promises in Jeremiah 29:11 – 14 (MSG):

I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for. “When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen. “When you come looking for me, you’ll find me. Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed.” God’s Decree.

He hears our prayers and cares about the intimate details of our lives. Putting our trust and hope in the things of this world will leave us high and dry every time… but when we place our trust in God, we know that through every crisis we are learning to be more obedient to God and the plans He has for our lives.
