    • What are you standing around?

Posted at 8:05 am by sneuhofer, on October 16, 2018

      GO!

Acts 1:3 (NCV)  After his death, he showed himself to them and proved in many ways that he was alive. The apostles saw Jesus during the forty days after he was raised from the dead, and he spoke to them about the kingdom of God.

In the first chapter of Acts, Luke writes about the disciples’ time with the resurrected Christ. These men had been eye-witnesses to Christ and his ministry prior to his death. During this 40 days period, Jesus talked to them about the coming kingdom of God. In His last words to them in Acts 1:8, Jesus promises the Holy Spirit. They knew that John baptized with water representing new life (Luke 3:16), but Jesus was promising something else. They would find out what being baptized with the Holy Spirit meant in a matter of days (Acts 2) because they would receive power to continue the work Jesus gave them to do. The Holy Spirit would to guide,  provide for, correct and protect them. It was through this power, they would reach their known world for Christ (Acts 1:8). Isn’t that amazing?

Okay, so let’s get a picture in our mind. The 40 days Jesus spent with the disciples after his death was coming to an end. Before he ascended into heaven, he told them that the Holy Spirit was coming. Can you picture the scene? Have you ever wondered what they were thinking or how they were feeling during this time? Do you think they were excited about what was coming? Jesus had told them, prior to his death, that they would do even greater things (John 14:12) than he did on the earth. Now I don’t know about you… but I would probably think back to the miracles Jesus performed during his time of ministry. Whoa… I am going to be able to heal the sick and perhaps give sight to the blind?  Whoa…just whoa!

So the final words Jesus spoke to the disciples as the resurrected Christ is found in Acts 1:8:

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

After he said these words he was lifted into heaven and a cloud hid him from the disciple’s sight (Acts 1:9). Whoa… what would you have done or thought if you were one of the disciples witnessing Christ’s ascension that day? Would you have embraced the words of Jesus and immediately ran to tell someone everything you just saw? Or, would you have stood there with the disciples looking up at the sky?  I am not sure what I would have done. But don’t leave the scene too quickly. Just after Christ disappeared from their site, two men approached them and said “why are you standing there looking at the sky? Jesus whom you saw taken up to heaven will come back the same way you saw him go.” (Acts 1:11)

Whoa… can anyone guess what the moral of this story is???  Don’t get caught standing around looking up at the sky when Jesus returns….He wants us to be His witnesses! So what does “Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria look like to you? Let me tell you what that looks like from where I am in Virginia Beach, Virginia. My Jerusalem would be my neighborhood or the Virginia Beach area. My Judea would be other cities that make up the Hampton Roads region of Virginia: Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth. My Samaria would be the states surrounding Virginia – or it could represent the United States. To the ends of the earth…well that one should make sense… it’s anywhere God is calling me to go and be a witness for Him. The best part is, I am not alone! The Holy Spirit will be my guide every step of the way.

He has a purpose and a plan for each and every one of us. It is up to us to figure out what that purpose is and then be a witness for Him as we fulfill that purpose.

So what are you waiting for?  Go!

    • Unplug and calm the chaos

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on June 28, 2018

We live in a world of constant chaos. There is never TIME for anything or anyone. From the moment I’m so rudely awakened by the annoying buzz of the alarm clock, my life is nothing but constant motion. There are so many outside distractions demanding my undivided attention and every little second of my time.

      The day begins…

I’m sure you can relate to the routine…

✓ Get the kids up ready for school…”BRUSH YOUR TEETH!”
      ✓ Fix breakfast
      ✓ Let the dog(s) out
✓ Maybe give the spouse a kiss before they runs out the door to battle rush-hour traffic

Shhhhhh…was was that noise? It’s the school bus! “HURRY or you will  miss the bus! Don’t forget your lunch!” A quick kiss on the head and then… there is silence.

But only for a brief second of silence and then…

…it’s time for your own day to start. The door shuts behind your kids or your spouse and just like that you’re sent into the frenzy of getting yourself ready… shower, hair, make-up, let the dog in, traffic, deadlines, meetings, bosses.

There is never enough time to do what you’ve written on your list of things to do today…much less check anything off.

Everyone demands a piece of your time. This is exhausting just writing about it…but I have lived it too and let me just say…it is exhausting!

Have you ever watched clothes in the dryer?  Pieces tumble from the top of the dryer drum to the bottom in a circular motion. Sometimes I fee like my life is just like the clothes being tossed around in the dryer. So many things coming at me from every direction…it’s as if I’m spinning, spinning, spinning farther and farther out of control. On days like this I feel exhausted and I haven’t even gotten out of the house yet.

I know I have even said to myself… THERE HAS GOT TO BE SOMETHING BETTER THAN THIS! There has to be some kind of release, a quiet place where I can go and find refreshment and renewal.

Wait… I said quiet. Does that word even exist in my vocabulary or is it some sort of foreign language?

Let me just be real… my world is full of noise and stress. I am pretty sure yours is too. But it’s how I deal with the “stuff” this world throws at me that matters. Plain and simple…I have to UNPLUG.

UNPLUG? Who has time for that? God never wanted us to be in constant motion. He wants us to “be still” and get away for a few minutes with him. Jesus even found time in his busy schedule to get away (Matthew 14:23).  If Jesus can find time, I know I sure can.

Having time with God (establishing a quiet time) is a necessity if I want to hear His voice…and truthfully it’s really hard to listen for it if I’m running at “mach speed” with my hair on fire. I should’t be afraid of the silence,  I need to embrace it!  It’s only in the silence that I can truly relax in the presence of my Heavenly Father.  He wants to spend one-on-one time with  me with no distractions or interruptions.  In this quiet place I am able to “let go” of my over committed schedule and refocus on the Creator the Universe and His purpose for my life.

Yes that’s right… HE has a purpose for me and for you and it’s not to be in constant motion. Most of us do a pretty good job of filling our days with people, places and things. How will we know what our purpose is unless we get away and listen for God’s voice.

I promise, you will find renewed strength (Psalm 23:2, Isaiah 40:31) when you unplug from the noise and plug-in to a daily quiet time with Jesus.  He is our source for strength and our defense against the lies we hear from this world every day.

He’s calling us to come away and spend a little piece of our day with Him. Will you answer his call?  Christ did so much for us when He gave his life so that we could be forgiven.  Is it too much to give him just a few minutes out of our day?  The choice is yours – believe the lies of the enemy saying “You just don’t have time in your day for 1 more thing!”  or unplug and learn the truth.

    • Are you all that you were made to be?

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on June 19, 2018

1 Corinthians 15:10 (NCV) “But God’s grace has made me what I am, and his grace to me was not wasted.”

As I was reading through 1 Corinthians 15, I thought about Paul’s words “God’s grace has made me what I am.” Isn’t that so true? Every morning we wake up it’s because God has so graciously allowed us another day. I had to go to my Bible dictionary (Nelson’s Compact Bible Dictionary) and look up the word “grace”.

Grace – Favor or kindness shown without regard to the worth of merit of the one who receives it and in spite of what the person deserves.

Grace is given to us so freely, not because of who we are or what we’ve done, but because of God’s great love for us. As I read through the Bible, I can look at Paul’s life and see how God’s grace plucked him out of a life of persecuting and basically destroying the Christian church to a life of encouraging and building churches in his known world.

We might look at Paul and think he certainly didn’t deserve God’s grace; like all, Paul deserved death. (The wages of sin is death. Romans 6:23). But something miraculous happened to Paul on the road to Damascus that changed his life.  He bumped into the risen Lord (Acts 9:3 – 5) and experienced His grace first hand.

The gift of grace was given to Paul that day and he received it through repentance and faith. God had a purpose for Paul, just like God has a purpose for each and every one of us. After his Damascus road experience, Paul went from persecuting Christians to telling anyone who would listen of Christ’s redeeming love. His life was changed because he allowed God’s grace to wash over him and transform him into what God intended for him to be.

God’s grace abounds to all of us. Have you received His grace and are you allowing it to transform the way you live?
