    • Yes you can be…unshakable

Posted at 7:44 am by sneuhofer, on September 20, 2018

Watch out! There are rough times ahead!

John 16:1-3 (MSG) I’ve told you these things to prepare you for rough times ahead. They are going to throw you out of the meeting places. There will even come a time when anyone who kills you will think he’s doing God a favor. They will do these things because they never really understood the Father. I’ve told you these things so that when the time comes and they start in on you, you’ll be well-warned and ready for them.

In the 16th chapter of John, Jesus is preparing the disciples for the day when He will return to the Father. Jesus knows that the disciples’ hearts are troubled because He’s going away (v. 5). Jesus assures them that when he leaves, he will not leave them high-and-dry. He will send them a Helper…but the Helper can only come if Jesus goes. When the Helper (the Holy Spirit) comes, he will not only help the believer but the non-believer as well. The Holy Spirit will lead them into all truth. In this chapter, Jesus had so much more to say to his disciples but they weren’t ready to hear it. It was too much for them to handle at that moment.

Isn’t that an awesome thought? God cares so much about us that He gives us only what we can handle – one thing at a time.

In our lives when things get chaotic, it’s easy to let stress overwhelm us. But don’t let it. Psalm 48:14 (NASB) ensures “God is our God forever and ever and he will guide our paths until death.” He’s got our lives, and each and every circumstance in the palm of His hand. God will guide us through the Holy Spirit living inside of us. It is the Spirit who leads us in ALL truth.

Jesus spoke these words in John 16 over 2,000 years ago to His disciples and they are still true for us today. Isn’t this truth comforting?

John 16:33 (MSG) I’ve told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world

you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world.

I am so thankful to know that Jesus tells us we can have deep peace by trusting him. There’s one more thing to notice about this verse…Jesus tells his disciples they would have trouble too. “In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties.” GREAT…  just when we thought it was safe to go outside. But catch the last few words of verse 33… “But take heart! I h have conquered the world!” Jesus knew his time was coming soon. He knew he was going to die, but death would not hold Him. He would defeat death and the grave and rise again, conquering our sin once and for all.

So be brave dear friends. Jesus has “…told you these things to keep you from giving up.” Hold on to Jesus with everything in you! Dig into His word to find His promises for your situation and stand on them! You can do this! The Holy Spirit is living inside you…guiding you…giving you strength!

What circumstance do you have in your life right now that you need to be brave and stand firm? Are you giving up or are you relying on the Holy Spirit to guide you in all truth?

      Be brave! Don’t give up!

    • Jesus promises peace

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on March 29, 2018

In John 14:2 we see Jesus telling his disciples “There are many rooms in my Father’s house.  I am going there to prepare a place for you.”  The disciples had followed Jesus for the three years of his earthly ministry, but this is where it was time for Jesus to leave. Yes, Jesus was going to prepare a place for them – for all of us actually. He wanted to them to know that he would come back once all preparations were in place. He also wanted to assure them that he wasn’t leaving them alone either. He told his disciples about the Holy Spirit – a Helper – the Spirit of truth – who would come and be with them forever. “The world cannot accept him, because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you know him because he lives with you and he will be in you.” (Jon 14:17 NCV)

Jesus knew what was in store for the week ahead and is trying to prepare his disciples. “I leave you peace; my peace I give you.” (John 14:27)  But peace wouldn’t be the only thing he would give them, and it wouldn’t be just any peace. “My peace” he told them. WOW. Think about it, the God of the Universe in human form promised he would give HIS PEACE to his followers. Look closely at the verse; He doesn’t give peace as the world gives peace. Have you ever thought about how the world gives peace? When I think about this, I think about the advertiser’s concept of having to “keep up with the Joneses” to have peace and happiness. But that is not the peace we have witnessed in the word of God.

      The peace Jesus gives

      • surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7)
      • can calm the most treacherous storm (Matthew 8:26)
      • assures that He will be with us on top of every mountain and in the lowest of valleys (Psalm 139)

We can rest in the peace Jesus brings knowing He carried the sin of the world on his shoulders. He forever cancelled the debt of sin for all when he was nailed to the cross and died. We can also have peace in knowing that he didn’t let DEATH stop him, he ROSE AGAIN and sits at the right hand of the Father (Romans 8:34) interceding for you and for me. Just as he told his disciples, we can have PEACE knowing that he will come back for us and we will be with him for ETERNITY.

      How peaceful will that be?

This week as you go about your daily activities try to set aside time to thank Jesus for who he is and for what he did you for you that day on Calvary. Thank him for the PEACE that only he can give – and then TRUST in that PEACE. No matter where you are on your walk with him or what you have going on in your life right now – know that you have a Savior who loves you more than anything (John 3:16) and is still preparing your place in heaven.

    • I found Peace in the arms of Jesus!

Posted at 10:15 am by sneuhofer, on February 2, 2018

Philippians 4: 4 – 7 (NIV) “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

One morning, while driving to work, I couldn’t help but be held captivate by the beauty of the morning sky. During the drive, my mind wandered to the upcoming weather event.  It was the middle of January and the forecast for the remainder of the week called for snow. As I drove, it occurred to me that every time we have a major weather event the sky is always so peaceful, so beautiful…so amazing. It’s the calm before the impending storm.

Lost in thought and stuck in traffic, I thought back to the foster child we had in our care for 8 short days. My mind landed on the night before we took the little girl back to live with her Grandmother. Not know this would be my last night with her, I held her in my arms rocking back and forth and praying over her. There was an amazing sense of calmness that washed over me.  I believe with all my heart it was God letting me know everything was going to be ok. He had everything under control and He could see the big picture. Just like the sky on my morning drive, this was the beautiful moment before my impending storm.  For an moment there was peace and beauty and I stood in AWE of God and how he blessed our lives for eight short days with this little girl.

The next day the storm rolled in and the life we thought we were going to have with this sweet child drastically changed forever.  Social services called to tell us her grandmother had agreed to take care of her. Needless to say the waves of devastation came crashing in from all sides. This little girl being a part of our family wasn’t God’s plan for our lives.  In the days that followed there were several emotions to work through. I knew God was in control of the entire situation… and even though I felt my world was falling apart, I still was reminded of the night before – and the peace and awe I felt.

God’s peace transcends all understanding – even though there was great pain…  I was at peace – because I found strength, wisdom, understanding, and rest in HIM.

Father, Thank you so much for being my strength in the midst of a storm. Thank you Lord that I can run to you and find shelter and peace in You. Even though I may not understand your ways sometimes, I know you have a plan and a purpose for my life. Your plans are to prosper me and not harm me, to give me hope and a future (Jer. 29:11). Help me to wait for your perfect timing.  For it’s in your Son’s name I pray… Amen.
