    • Who’s blueprints are you following?

Posted at 11:30 am by sneuhofer, on February 26, 2021

Psalm 127: 1 (HCSB) Unless the Lord builds a house, its builders labor in vein; unless the Lord watches over a city the watchman stays alert in vein.

I can do absolutely nothing apart from God. As hard as I try to do things in my own strength, it’s fruitless if the Lord has not blessed it. When I look at Psalm 127:1, I’m reminded of all the times I’ve tried to run ahead of God, or felt like I knew what was better for me than He did.

This verse clearly tells me that if the Lord is included in the process, my efforts will not be in vein.

So that means, every time I decided to get ahead of God, my efforts weren’t successful…because the Lord wasn’t the one leading the charge. I was trying to force an outcome or make something on my own, haphazardly stepping in places God never designed for my feet to go.

      No more.

I’m laying down “my tools” and trusting God to build the house. What about you? Have you been trying to do something in your own strength? Are you tired? Do you feel like you’re beating your head against a wall? It’s probably time to engage God and determine if what you’re working so hard to accomplish is part of His plan for you.

    • Shopping cart madness

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on October 17, 2018

Leviticus 20:7-8 (MSG) Set yourselves apart for a holy life. Live a holy life, because I am God, your God. Do what I tell you; live the way I tell you. I am the God who makes you holy.

Have you ever had one of those days when you forgot who is REALLY in control? I sure have. Today, I believe God wants me to understand that HE is God and I am not. Should be a simple truth right… so why can’t I get that through my THICK head sometimes? Truth moment here: Sometimes I have a tendency to “control” things that are completely and totally out of my control. It’s just like grabbing a shopping cart at a grocery store and “steering” it up and down desired isles, I grab a “shopping cart” in my life and won’t let go. I try so hard to “steer” things the way I want them to go. By trying to control the “cart” (outcomes of circumstances that I have no business trying to control in the first place) I fail miserably.

Plain and simple: When I try to “take control”,  things don’t get better…they get worse.

God doesn’t want me calling the shots of my own life. He wants me to live a life of total surrender, holding back NOTHING from Him. He wants it all: my life, my spouse, my child, my finances, my job/vocation, my talents, my time…etc.

I have to unwrap my white-knuckled grip from around the “shopping cart” of my life and let go!

When I surrender fully to Christ and allow him to “steer the shopping cart of my life” amazing things begin to happen. I see Him instead of the circumstance. I feel His peace instead of the chaos that surrounds. I find a deep sense of joy that carries me through the most emotionally gut-wrenching blow. I see abundance in the midst of despair and poverty.

This process of “giving up control” or “total surrender to Christ and his lordship” never ends. When I decide to release control of my life over to Christ, He will show up in ways I would have never dared to dream or imagine.

    • Got Stress?

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on October 18, 2017
Psalm 9:9-10 (MSG) God’s a safe-house for the battered, a sanctuary during bad times. The moment you arrive, you relax; you’re never sorry you knocked.

In the midst of everyday life we are all faced with certain degrees of stress. In the research I’ve done, most doctors agree that some stress is good for us. However, when we operate in emergency mode all the time, stress can wreak havoc on our bodies with physical consequences such as panic and/or heart attacks, depression, diabetes, and a number of other physical ailments. As Christians, this type of “havoc” leaves us incapable of doing what God has put us on this earth to do.

When Jesus walked the earth, He set the example for how we are to live our lives. Taking a close look at his earthly ministry, I couldn’t find one verse that talks about Jesus being stressed out because He had too much “stuff” on His plate. The truth is, Jesus woke up before everyone else so that He could find a quiet place to pray (Mark 1:35), during the day He asked His disciples to wait while He slipped away to spend time with the Father (Luke 5:16).

It seems Jesus spent time throughout His day consulting the Father instead of letting the little things get to Him. I’m thinking if Jesus could find time in His day to talk with the Father, I should do the same thing. Instead of letting the “little things” at work or at home get under my skin and fester, I should seek God’s guidance and direction through prayer and time in His word. It’s not like He doesn’t know how to handle the problem. All He’s waiting for is an invitation from me to get involved.

The words of Matthew 11:28 – 30 are a great reminder to me when I feel myself getting stressed out.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (The Message)

I know I can find “rest” in God’s word during the most stressful times. No matter what issue brought me to the safe-house of God’s word, I know I can find rest, peace and encouragement there.

Psalm 23:1-3 (MSG) God, my shepherd! I don’t need a thing. You have bedded me down in lush  meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from. True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction.

Psalm 73:26 (NCV) My body and my mind may become weak, but God is my strength. He is mine forever.

1 Peter 5: 7 (NIV) Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
