    • What’s your choice, bondage or freedom?

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on February 19, 2018

Romans 6:20 – 23 (MSG) “As long as you did what you felt like doing, ignoring God, you didn’t have to bother with right thinking or right living, or right anything for that matter. But do you call that a free life? What did you get out of it? Nothing you’re proud of now. Where did it get you? A dead end. But now that you’ve found you don’t have to listen to sin tell you what to do, and have discovered the delight of listening to God telling you, what a surprise! A whole, healed, put-together life right now, with more and more of life on the way! Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God’s gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master.”

Did you know that the sin in our life holds us hostage in a guilt and shame-filled prison cell. It might not seem like you’re in a jail cell at the time…but this is how Satan plays his games. Sin is fun isn’t it? If it wasn’t, no one would do it…right??? Without even knowing it, sin binds us to the wall of desolation where there is no hope and we are destined to die. This is a tough pill to swallow for me because a “little” sin (over indulging in food or alcohol, gossip, looking at a hot guy for far too long, etc.)  is so much fun! Isn’t it? But the “little” sin brings just as much death at the sin we like to define as “big” sin – murder, rape, stealing, etc.

Praise God there is hope outside of those sin induced prison walls. His name is Jesus Christ. When we accept Him as our Lord and Savior, our old way of life is gone (2 Corinthians 5:17)… nailed to the very cross where Jesus paid our bail. Jesus, the only sinless Son of God, served the time for our “crime.” No matter what we’ve done, we can be assured that our old life is gone and we’re set free from the bondage of sin’s grip (John 8:36). We are free to live an eternal life. It’s God’s gift to us.

With this gift of eternal life, we can now begin to leave our old life behind and walk in the freedom of God’s grace. Jesus begins a new work in us. Does this mean we will never sin again? Don’t I wish! We were all born with a sin nature so it’s only natural to sin. As a Christian it is important to remember that when (yep, I said when not if) we fall into sin we don’t have to go back to the guilt-filled prison cell because we have already been set free in Christ. We can pick ourselves up and continue to move forward being transformed by God’s grace. It is so important to stay in the Word and learn everything we can…this will bring us into a closer relationship with Christ everyday. With the Holy Spirit as our guide to help us through our daily experiences, we can live the way Christ intend us to life…fully alive without guilt or shame.
I like to keep the picture of Peter walking on water in my mind. When Peter fixed his eyes on Jesus he could walk on water. It was only when he looked at the circumstances surrounding him that he was overcome and fell (Matthew 14:28 – 30). I encourage you today to keep your eyes on Jesus; don’t let the distractions of this world take your focus away from Him.

    • Who do you run to?

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on September 13, 2017

In the opening verses of Psalm 7, David is writing in response to being falsely accused of trying to kill King Saul and seize the throne for himself (read about this story in 1 Samuel 24:9-11). David knows the accusations are not true. It is mere slander directed at him. But take a look at how he decides to handle his current circumstances. David is stirred with emotion as he cries out to God here in Psalm 7:1-8 (MSG):

“God! God! I am running to you for dear life (emphasis mine); the chase is wild. If they catch me, I’m finished (emphasis mine): ripped to shreds by foes fierce as lions, dragged into the forest and left unlooked for, unremembered. God, if I’ve done what they say betrayed my friends, ripped off my enemies. If my hands are really that dirty, let them get me, walk all over me, leave me flat on my face in the dirt. Stand up, God; pit your holy fury against my furious enemies. Wake up, God. My accusers have packed the courtroom; it’s judgment time. Take your place on the bench (emphasis mine), reach for your gavel, throw out the false charges against me. I’m ready, confident (emphasis mine) in your verdict: “Innocent.””

The Message paraphrase says it all doesn’t it? How many times have you felt like you have “run for dear life” from situations that are going on in your life? I sure can name a few. But look what David does. He doesn’t take matters into his own hands when he’s falsely accused. He realizes who has the final say and submits the issue to God right off the bat as if to say “Here God. This is my problem and it’s bigger than me. I didn’t do anything wrong but if I did let me know and I will pay the consequences. If not, I know you will judge me as…Innocent.”

Awesome isn’t it. He knows what happened and will judge me accordingly. I know I’ve been falsely accused of a few things by so called friends. The things they accused me of never happened. My name was thrown around at backyard cookouts and other social gatherings like I was the bad guy. As the rumor-mill began to churn, I admit I allowed things like anxiety and anger to build up inside. I held onto these things and then allowed myself to get “bogged” down in worthless chatter with other people. What I failed to do was run to God when I was first falsely accused. He would have given me strength to face my accuser, the words to say (if any) and the courage to listen the truth instead of the lies being spewed.

Praise God it’s never too late to start over with God. He gives us second, third, fourth even forty-fourth chances. Have you ever been falsely accused of something? Did you turn everything over to God and let him handle it or did you try to take matters into you own hands?

The next time you’re falsely accused, give it to God – He is the only perfect judge and He will get you through to the other side.

    • Set Free or Held Hostage

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on August 25, 2017
One Sunday a few years back, our service opened with a powerful worship set then went into a video clip. This video had no spoken words but as images moved across the screen and music played in the background, I was quickly drawn into this story about being held hostage by the words displayed on the screen.
In the video, someone had come to pay the debt for the person being held hostage. When the jailer went to tell the hostage he was free to go, the hostage declined. He had been there for too long. What once drove him mad, had  become comfortable. “No thank you” came the response from the hostage as he shut the door to his cell. He chose to remain captive by the “false security” of the four walls around him.
What a powerful and compelling video.
Sometimes I think we do the same thing as Christians. We hold ourselves hostage. We accept Christ as our Savior and in so doing he sets us free from the sin that has held us “hostage” for so long. So why is it so hard for us to walk away from the chains of our sin?
I’ll tell you why. It’s because of the battle we fight in our mind.  You know what I’m taking about don’t you? Those recordings that play over and over again in our head. Maybe one of those recordings comes from childhood “You’re not good enough.”  “You’re not pretty enough.”
“Why can’t you be more like your brother / sister?” Or, perhaps it’s the friend that said, “Come on! It’s only one, what can it hurt?” It can also be those friends encouraging you to do “what’s best for you” even when it doesn’t line up with the truth of God’s word. Perhaps it’s someone very close to you questioning”can’t  you do anything right?” So you believe yourself to be a failure at everything.

We think the words people closest to us say are the absolute truth for some reason, and we allow ourselves to be defined by them. No matter what old recording we have playing in the back of our head, we have to ask the Holy Spirit to OBLITERATE those recordings or Satan will use them to hold us hostage. Here is a visual object lesson that brought healing in me that I never imagined possible, I hope will do the same for you. I know we don’t know what God looks like, but just try to imagine God with a huge sledge hammer smashing all the negative recordings of your past to bits. You are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). Your past is GONE the moment you allow Christ into your heart!

It’s time for us to throw off the chains that hold us hostage, move out of our comfort zone and begin to walk in the freedom we have in Christ.
Jesus said in John 8:34-36  “I tell you the truth, everyone who lives in sin is a slave to sin. A slave does not stay with a family forever, but a son belongs to the family forever.  So if the Son makes you free, you will be truly free.”
