    • Are you suited for the day?

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on April 18, 2018
A while back, I was given the opportunity to take a class on the book of Ephesians. This letter was written by Paul to strengthen the believers in Ephesus in their Christian faith. In Ephesians 5, Paul encourages us to live in the light, be like Christ, to discover and learn what pleases the Lord and then DO IT. Ok, that seems easy enough right? On the contrary, it’s not easy at all. It’s a daily commitment to be aware of His presence and to submit our own agendas to His will.

If we are to live in the light and be like Christ, there is absolutely no way humanly possible we can get there on our own. It is up to us to be mindful and on guard. Each step we take closer to Christ, the more Satan wants to destroy our lives. He will use any tactic in his arsenal to get us sidetracked and deter our focus off the things Christ has for us.

Knowing that Satan wants to destroy our lives and will do anything to make that happen, we have to be prepared to “do battle” every day. Ephesians 6., beginning in verse 10, Paul encourages us to be strong in the Lord by wearing the full armor of God. Like any soldier on the front lines of a war, we also must put on this armor every single day. The armor of God will help us fight against Satan and his evil tricks (v.11).

Go with me for just a minute to tomorrow morning. Are you ready? Consider this scenario. When the alarm clock goes off, turn it off of course, and go through this little exercise. Pretend that you are preparing for the “battle” of the day. I realize this may not be a stretch for some of you – especially those who have been jolted out of bed by the cries of a hungry baby and not the soothing buzz of an alarm clock…but stay with me. Envision yourself putting the belt of truth around your waist and the protection of right living on your chest (v.14).

What is the belt of truth you ask? It’s the word of God and must be the standard by which we live our lives. Everything we do, everything we say, and every thought we have needs to be aligned with the truth of God’s word. People are watching you and Satan would like nothing more than to trip you up. It is important to know the truth of God’s word and then live it out or clothe ourselves with its protection for the day ahead.

Next, we put on the good news of peace to help us stand strong (v 15). This is the gospel of Jesus Christ. He died so that we could live abundant lives. This good news brings peace because we know our future is secure. We continue putting on the armor by taking the shield of faith. We must ask the Lord to release the gift of faith in us so that we are able to stand firm. Imagine yourself putting on the helmet of salvation. We must remember that our own future is secure because of Christ’s redeeming work on Calvary. He paid the price – our home is in heaven. Then lastly, pick up the sword of the spirit, with is the word of God.

With this armor securely in place we’re now ready to take on the day. How do you look? I bet you look great! Are you ready to face anything Satan throws at you? Did you notice how important it was to clothe yourself with the truth and fight with the sword of the spirit? That means we must know what God’s word says and apply it to our daily lives. We have to be aware of the “things” that can easily “entangle” us so that we can slash through them with the truth.

While this armor that we’ve just put on is great protection, we also need one more thing. We must pray, and when we think we’ve prayed enough – pray even more! Nothing is too small to pray about. In fact we should replace worry with prayer (Phil. 4:6-7), pray in faith (James 1:6) and then praise God whether he answers our prayers or not (Psalm 105:1-4).

Are you ready to stand firm? My I encourage you today to be diligent in your fight against Satan and his schemes. Remember you’re not alone. God is with you. You have the power of the Holy Spirit living in you.

Have a great day today and be confident knowing you’re protected by the armor of God!

    • Praising God with everything in me!

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on February 8, 2018

Psalm 103: 1 – 2 (AMP) “Bless and affectionately praise the Lord, O my soul, And all that is [deep] within me, bless His holy name. Bless and affectionately praise the Lord, O my soul, And do not forget any of His benefits;”

I am always so amazed when God speaks to me in unexpected places throughout my day. Last night, He chose to speak to me through one of the novels I’m currently reading. This book is about a woman who lives in the suburban area of Chicago and has been away from the Lord for quite some time. In the story, she attends a church service at a homeless shelter and at this particular point in the story, the author used the first two verses of Psalm 103 to convey her point. The words in those verses leapt so far off the page at me that I had to put down the book and grab my Bible to do some more digging. Psalm 103 verse 1 starts with “My whole being (my inmost being, my soul) praise the Lord; all my being (with everything that is within me), praise His Holy name.” David continues in verse 2 with “my whole being (oh my soul), Praise the Lord and do not forget all His kindnesses.” [the wording is different depending on the translation]

WOW! Did you catch that? Three times in two verses David is encouraging us to praise God with everything fiber of our being. To me that means we are to praise God in the way we live our lives, conduct business, talk to our spouse and children, and even the way we act when no one else is looking. I had to ask myself a tough question “Does everything I do bring praise to God?”

As I continued to read verses three and four, David writes “He (God) forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He (God) saves my life from the grave and loads me with love and mercy.” How cool is that? God will forgive our sins if we repent of them. That’s what His word promises. In Psalm 103, David says tells us there is more than just forgiveness of sins, there is also the part where “He heals all my diseases.”

When you think about the word “disease” what do you think about? I know for me, its cancer and heart disease because these diseases have affected my family. Other than common diseases such as these, have you ever thought about the other “diseases” in our lives that need healing? You know, diseases such as anger, bitterness, unforgivess, rejection, grief, denial, and rebellion. This list could go on and on and on.

I had to ask myself the question again. What disease in my life is holding me back from living the life God has planned for me? Yikes! When I look at the word “disease” that way, I have some “sickness” to overcome. But I will not let my “disease” define me. God desires for me (and for you too) to live a life of prosperity and peace.

I know I can draw on God’s love and mercy, because His word tell me I can. As I spend some time looking at things in my life that hold me back from all God has in store for me, may I encourage you to do the same. I will be seeking God’s forgiveness and His strength walk through the process of healing. I know I won’t be able to stand in my own strength; I will have to rely on His.

We all need to repent of “diseases” that hinder our relationship with Christ so that our entire being can bring honor and praise to Him.  After we have repented, we have His love, mercy, and strength to help us STAND FIRM while we’re being renewed and transformed.

    • Motives… good or not so good?

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on January 16, 2018

Proverbs 16: 2, 3 (NCV) “You may believe you are doing right, but the Lord will judge your reasons. Depend on the Lord in whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”

When reading through Proverbs 16 this morning, I decided to use it as a type of “check-up” guide to examine the motives behind the things I do and the way I live my daily life. Verse 2 says

“You may believe you are doing right but the Lord will judge your reasons.” (Proverbs 16:2)

The Lord sees EVERYTHING. There is not ONE thing I can hide from Him.  I find that truth in Psalm 139:2 “You know my thoughts before I even think them.”

This means that when I depend on the Lord in whatever I do (v3) my plans will succeed. (see also 2 Corinthians 9:8, Proverbs 3:6) When I live in such a manner that is pleasing to the Lord, even my enemies will make peace with me (Proverbs 16:7). I know the thought of this can be a stretch, but that’s what God’s word says. “If we listen to what is taught we will succeed” and if I trust in the Lord (in all things at all times) I will be happy (Proverbs 16:20).

WOW! Just think, even in the deepest darkest valley of my life I can be “happy”. The same is true for you. We can all be full of peace and joy because Jesus gives us peace that surpasses all understanding (John 14: 27).

What are the motivations behind things you do and say? Would they bring honor and glory God? If not, this is an area to grow in. Remember the Lord knows and sees all.
