    • Let’s get real…

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on February 5, 2018

Colossians 3 1-2 (MSG) So if you’re serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective. [emphasis mine]

Have you accepted Christ as your Savior but found yourself falling back into some of your old patterns? Perhaps you are faithful in going to church every Sunday, but not so faithful when it comes to acting like you even know Jesus the rest of the week. Living the Christian life is not easy, that’s why God has blessed us with “spiritual brothers and sisters” to help us along in our journey. Being in community (or fellowship or hanging out) with other believers is essential to growth as Christians.

I attend a church where we gather on Sunday mornings for a regular church service, then during the week, smaller groups gather in members’ homes. These groups are typically 8 – 10 (sometimes more) adults who meet for a little fellowship and Bible study. Honestly, it’s in the smaller group setting that I’ve been personally challenged to work on the areas of my life that are not of Christ. The relationships I’ve found through these groups are the most genuine friendships I’ve ever had in my life. I can tell these people anything without fear of it being “front page news” the next day. I can be honest and real and even downright raw in front of them. It’s in those real moments that my life has changed, and my faith in Christ has grown.

As I read through Colossians, I couldn’t help but think about the impact the smaller group setting has made on my life and in the lives of countless others. I gave my life to Christ one Sunday morning at a very young age. I didn’t exactly know what that meant at the time and fell away from Christ in my mid-teens. When I came back to Christ as an adult, I knew I couldn’t walk out my faith on my own. Without Christian friends surrounding me and holding me accountable, Satan was able to easily take advantage and sway my focus off Christ and back into the very lifestyle that was dragging me deeper and deeper into a pit of darkness.

This “see-saw” type life between the world and those things of Christ went on for months until finally one day I had enough. I craved Christian community. I believe God planted that needs inside me because He knew I needed to be around a body of believers who had walked down the same road I walked and could relate to my same struggles. I decided to take the step and connect with a small group and the rest is pretty much history. From the very first group night… I got serious about living my new resurrected life.

What about you? Do you have a group of people in your life that will hold you accountable and pray with you?

I challenge you today to find Christian brothers and sisters that you can walk your Christian life with. There is nothing better that “doing this life” with people who love me and challenge me to be all that I can be through Christ.

    • Are your eyes glued on wisdom?

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on January 17, 2018

When you have tough questions where do you turn for advice? Proverbs 17:24 says “Sensible people keep their eyes glued on wisdom, but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth.” (NLT) This verse tells me that when I have a tough question or need advice on something, I should look for wisdom. Looking for wisdom can be found by reading God’s word, prayer and by seeking the advice of a trusted advisor (a more mature Christian) or a trusted friend.

There were times in my life when I went seeking for answers but instead of praying first and asking God to place someone in my life, I sought advice from various friends (Christians and non-Christians). Depending on the subject, you can probably imagine some of the counsel I received. What I’ve learned over time is to seek out the advice of a trusted friend. Trusted friends are the people in your life who have been where you are and can help you better than anyone else.

I think God uses our experiences for two reasons. First, He desires to draw us into a deeper more intimate relationship with Him by relying on Him when the going gets tough. Secondly, He uses our experiences to help others who may be going through similar circumstances.

Want to grow in your faith? Ask a more mature Christian for suggestions on how to draw closer to Christ.

Want to overcome an addiction? Ask someone who has been there and has begun an entirely new life for themselves.

God places people in our life for a reason. Allow those people God has placed in your to help you gain wisdom and understanding.

    • Friends are a Gift from God

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on October 16, 2017

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 “All praise to the God and Father of our Master, Jesus the Messiah! Father of all mercy! God of all healing counsel! He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, he brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us. We have plenty of hard times that come from following the Messiah, but no more so than the good times of his healing comfort—we get a full measure of that, too.”

Have you ever felt like your situation was so bad that no one could possibly understand what you were going through or how you were feeling? I know I sure have. I have been in valleys so low that I knew I was the only person on the planet walking through that very dry and desolate time. I was all alone and there was NO ONE who could understand what I was feeling or my heartache.

      Anyone with me?

Looking at the verses above I see now that I am not alone and neither are you. God Himself comes alongside us when we walk through the tough times of our lives and then places people in our path who have experienced similar circumstances. He never intended for us to face this world on our own. He will provide friends to help us and support us. Biblical examples would be the friendship between David and Jonathan and Naomi and Ruth.

I thank God daily for the incredible people He has placed in my life. Some have been there specifically to help me become a better person and encourage me to keep going. Others are there to help me see that I am not sitting in a great big boat alone hopelessly rowing.

God understands what we need, when we need it. I have felt His love show up through people in the deepest darkest valleys of my life. People who know the pain I feel because they have experienced it firsthand. God uses them as an instrument of His love, mercy and grace. Once on the other side of the dark valley, I can pass the comfort I have received on to others.

God uses the hurts (or trials of any kind) in our lives to grow us, increase our faith, and lift others up in their times of trouble.

Rest assured! We can find comfort to weather any storm in the One who created us all. He will not leave us or forsake us no matter what situation we find ourselves in.
