    • Reminders in the Sunrise

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on August 19, 2017
Lamentations 3:22 – 23 (NCV) The Lord’s love never ends; his mercies never stop. They are new every morning; Lord, your loyalty is great.
I love it when God blesses me with the opportunity to get away for the weekend with close friends. I don’t get these little “girl trips” too often but when I do, I grab two of my closest girl friends and head down to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. While there, we seem to eat way too much, laugh until we cry, and stay up way too late. I am certainly sleep deprived when I get home but it’s okay because it’s during this time with my girlfriends that we can just relax and enjoy ourselves. We don’t have to worry about the cares of our everyday life back home.
On the last morning of these little “girl trips” it’s become a tradition to set an early alarm and watch the sun rise over the ocean. The Master Creator never disappoints on these mornings…the  colors He splashes onto the morning sky so magnificent to behold.  The sun, a deep yellowish-bright orange ball gives increasing light to a pale pinkish-blue sky as it continues to make its bold entrance on the morning. Each time I watch the incredible display of God’s design, I thank him for waking us up in time to witness just a glimpse of His stunning creation.
It is here in these still small moments, as the sun is just pushing up on the horizon, that I witness the beauty of its light over the expanse of the ocean. My gaze doesn’t linger there too long when I am also reminded of another display of beauty….the outstretched arms of Christ on Calvary and the love for you and me that held him there.
And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love—how wide and how long and how high and how deep that love is. (Ephesians 3:18 ~ NCV)
The next time you are able to catch a sunrise I hope it reminds you of just how much Jesus loves you!

    • Love and Service

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on August 17, 2017

As Christians, Paul challenges us in 1 Corinthians 14:1, to follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts. Each time I settle in do study a specific part of scripture, I like to see how my three favorite translations convey the message. Take a look at  how 1 Corinthians 14:1 is translated below.

1 Corinthians 14:1 (NIV) “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts”

1 Corinthians 14:1 (MSG) “Go after a life of love as if your life depended on it—because it does. Give yourselves to the gifts God gives you.”

1 Corinthians 14:1 (NCV) “You should seek after love, and you should truly want to have the spiritual gifts”

I really get a great deal from the Message (MSG) paraphrase. This tells me I am supposed to go after a life of love as if my life depended on it and then give myself to the gifts God has given me.

When I am working through an area of my life I like to break the verse down into workable pieces then turn the “search light” inward. Since the first part of this verse is talking about love, I think it’s a good idea to go back to the LOVE chapter (1 Corinthians 13:4-8) and review what the Bible says the definition of LOVE really is.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (MSG) “Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have. Love doesn’t strut, Doesn’t have a swelled head, Doesn’t force itself on others, Isn’t always “me first,” Doesn’t fly off the handle, Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others, Doesn’t revel when others grovel, Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, Puts up with anything, Trusts God always, Always looks for the best, Never looks back, But keeps going to the end. Love never dies.”

Oh yeah…right from the start I can see I have some work to do. Can I just be honest for a moment.  I’ve wanted to “give up” on love a time or two – I mean who hasn’t when the going gets tough. I’ve also been selfish – wanting things my way.  Oh, and that “fly off the handle” part… Yep…I have some work to do.

I’m not going to beat myself up there, let me quickly go to the second part of 1 Corinthians 14:1. Not only am I suppose to go after LOVE as if my life depends on it, I am also to give myself to the gifts God gave me. Spiritual gifts are those gifts administered by the Holy Spirit and are used for building the church up. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are found in 1 Corinthians 12.

1 Corinthians 12: 4 – 11 (NCV) “There are different kinds of gifts, but they are all from the same Spirit. There are different ways to serve but the same Lord to serve. And there are different ways that God works through people but the same God. God works in all of us in everything we do. Something from the Spirit can be seen in each person, for the common good. The Spirit gives one person the ability to speak with wisdom, and the same Spirit gives another the ability to speak with knowledge. The same Spirit gives faith to one person. And, to another, that one Spirit gives gifts of healing. The Spirit gives to another person the power to do miracles, to another the ability to prophesy. And he gives to another the ability to know the difference between good and evil spirits. The Spirit gives one person the ability to speak in different kinds of languages and to another the ability to interpret those languages. One Spirit, the same Spirit, does all these things, and the Spirit decides what to give each person.”
As I look at love and spiritual gifts through the lens of following Christ, I can see that it’s His example I should follow. Jesus stepped out of the comforts of heaven to come to earth and be a servant to all.

Jesus loved Father God and he loved the people around him.  Throughout scripture you can see the example Jesus set of trusting the Father’s will for His life. Jesus gave himself away and utilized what the Father had given Him to encourage and build people up while at the same time bringing honor and glory to God.

My desire is to live a life that always leads with love, and always encourages and builds others up. God has specifically equipped each one of us to accomplish the tasks He has put us on this earth to do. The question is are we using the time he has given us wisely or are we chasing our own selfish dreams and desires.

It is only when we use the talents and gifts God has given us and love the people he has placed around us that we bring honor and glory to God.

    • I need a revelation!

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on August 16, 2017

      Galatians 1: 11 – 24 (NIV)

“I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. I did not receive it from any man (emphasis mine), nor was I taught it (emphasis mine); rather, I received it by revelation (emphasis mine)from Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man (emphasis mine), nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went immediately into Arabia and later returned to Damascus.”

After Paul’s Damascus road experience (Acts 9), these verses in Galatians tell us that he went into Arabia to spend time alone with God – to be taught, not by human experience but by revelation from God himself. Paul was taught first-hand by the God of the universe…and we can be too. As difficult as a few minutes of spare time may be to find, it is essential that we set-aside a part of our day to listen and learn from Him. Getting quiet and actually listening is a vital part of our walk with Christ.

I realize we all have busy lives. There are so many “things” competing for our time; schedules to keep, kids to get to school, soccer practices get to, spouses to spend time with, animals to feed and walk, bosses that needed things done yesterday, bills to pay… and the list gets longer and longer. No wonder we’re so overwhelmed and exhausted. For me personally, sometimes it feels like there is nothing I can do or no where I can go to get away from the never ending chaos. I feel exhausted just writing about it.

      Jeremiah 29:13

Don’t be dismayed; there is hope. The Bible teaches that there is somewhere we can run and find guidance and direction as well as comfort and rest for our dry and thirsty souls. Psalm 42:1-2 says “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” The Psalmist recognizes his deep need for God, he longs to spend time with him on a daily basis – to drink from the eternal well that never runs dry.

He also recognizes that God will quench his thirst and in that fact he finds hope and renewal for his soul. In the same way, God will quench our thirst – He is continually with us and longs for us to know him intimately. In order to establish this type of relationship with God we have to be in His word and apply the truths of it on a daily basis.

Have you set aside a few minutes during your day to sit at the feet of Jesus and discover all He has for you?
