    • Are you a bridge builder?

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on August 31, 2017

Acts 1:8 (NCV) But when the Holy Spirit comes to you, you will receive power. You will be my witnesses—in Jerusalem, in all of Judea, in Samaria, and in every part of the world.”

After Stephen’s death (Acts 7:58) the church in Jerusalem fell under great persecution. During this time, Christians were scattered from their homes in Jerusalem into the unfamiliar areas of Judea and Samaria. As they stepped out of their comfort zones, they took the gospel of Jesus Christ with them. Jesus’ command to “be His witnesses in all of Judea and Samaria” was unfolding and the fulfillment of scripture was happening right before their very eyes.
The early Christians were passionate about spreading the good news of Jesus Christ to everyone even though they were experiencing great persecution. It didn’t matter what being a Christ follower cost them. They didn’t run and hide when times got tough because they were fueled by the consuming fire of the Holy Spirit and open to His leading and guidance. They knew they were not alone because Jesus had promised the Counselor who would be with them and equip them to His hands and feet.
As Christians in the modern world, we are still commanded by Jesus to be his witnesses. The gospel of Jesus Christ is for everyone and we should always be ready to talk to anyone who may be seeking. But I often have to ask myself do I have the same passion that the disciples did to reach their known world for Christ? Or, have I allowed the world to “steal” my boldness?
I know for a fact God has placed me several situations to talk to others about how Jesus has changed my life, but to be honest, sometimes I let the opportunity just pass me by.  Then, of course, I have to beat myself up with interrogating questions until I get myself back in gear…
“Why are you such a chicken! You have the same power that rose Christ from the dead living inside of you and are choosing to be a chicken?!?”
Am I the only one who talks to themselves like this?
God wants to use our life experiences, yes the good the bad and the ugly,  to draw people to Him. I like to think of it as building a bridge to Jesus. I want to share an example of how God used me to build a bridge between a co-worker and Jesus a few years back. Because of the nature of our working relationship, we became friends and I had the opportunity to support and encourage her through what she deemed as a “very humiliating and embarrassing” season of her life.
Because we shared similar experiences, one day she asked me a very pointed question about how I finally turned my life around. At this moment the Holy Spirit gave me the words I needed to tell my co-worker about the love, hope, and healing I found in Jesus Christ. She listened to what I had to say and because I had built a relationship with her, she trusted me to tell her the truth. She saw the way I lived my life and she had heard stories about my past. Although I didn’t pray with her to accept Christ that day I planted a seed. Who knows, maybe one day I will have the opportunity to pray with her to accept Christ as her Savior. That’s not up to me. For now I just continue to seek God’s face and ask Him to give me opportunities to share His good news.
So are you willing to use your life to build a bridge to Jesus? Perhaps there is someone in your God is leading you to build a relationship with because they are in desperate need of Jesus? He will direct your path. Just like my example, it was over a year before I finally told my co-worker how my life was forever changed by Christ. All we have to do is build the relationship to tell people about Jesus, He can walk over the bridge in His own timing.
Today, ask God to give you the willingness and courage to step out and talk to someone who really needs to be changed by the love of Christ. He will direct you from there.

    • Where did the summer go?

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on August 30, 2017

It’s hard to believe it’s almost fall. The words perhaps cliché but honestly “where does the time go?” It seems like just last weekend that my family and I were celebrating Memorial Day weekend by my mother-in-law’s pool. Have you ever felt like the world is spinning in a thousand different directions? I know I do.  At times I feel like my life is a roller coaster full of responsibilities and appointments. At every turn I’m looking for a way to stop the ride for just a few seconds so I can catch my breath.

When my life seems to get out of control it’s usually because I haven’t “fueled” my spirit meaning,  I’ve forgotten the most important part of my day… my quiet moments with Jesus. I have been too busy to “come to the water” and drink from the well that doesn’t run dry.

Anyone care to admit that with me?

When I finally realize I am running on empty…I head to the comfort of my favorite quiet spot and flip to the following scriptures to get me back on track:

Isaiah 55:1 – 2 (MSG) “Hey there! All who are thirsty, come to the water! Are you penniless? Come anyway—buy and eat! Come, buy your drinks, buy wine and milk. Buy without money—everything’s free! Why do you spend your money on junk food, your hard-earned cash on cotton candy? Listen to me, listen well: Eat only the best, fill yourself with only the finest. Pay attention, come close now, listen carefully to my life-giving, life-nourishing words.”

Truth: God wants to satisfy our need for spiritual nourishment.

Psalm 23 1-3 God, my shepherd! I don’t need a thing. You have bedded me down in lush meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from. True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction.

Truth: God wants to refresh and renew us.

Matthew 11:28-30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
God doesn’t want us to be stressed out from the “stuff” of life.
Truth: God wants us to walk with Him and learn from Him.

Have you ever taken the time to think about your relationship with Jesus? Do you have a relationship with Him? Perhaps, you’re a Christian and you attend services on Sunday and then go about your life Monday through Saturday. Have you ever felt that something is missing or that there should be something more to your walk with Christ? Maybe you have walked with Christ for years but haven’t found the spiritual nourishment these verses talk about.

May I encourage you to find a time and a place and let God fill you with His peace and springs living water. Even if it’s just 5 minutes a day to start… it’s 5 minutes with the God of the universe! I promise it will be worth it.

    • I’m Standing Firm in Christ

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on August 29, 2017
1 Corinthians 16:13 (NLT) Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.
In the final chapter of 1 Corinthians, Paul encourages the believers to stand firm in their faith. As Christians living in the world today, we should follow the instructions Paul gave to the church at Corinth. You see, Paul understood something. He knew first-hand about the persecution the believers would face because he experienced it himself.  Being a follower of Jesus Christ was not easy in Paul’s day. Sometimes to follow Christ meant facing death.
The same is true in today’s society. There are Christians persecuted because of their faith every day. Some of them, not so much those in the United States, even die because they profess the name of Jesus. Paul encourages us to be on guard and be strong. In the book of Ephesians, Paul tells us to put on the full armor of God (Eph. 6:10 – 18) so that we can stand against the tricks of Satan.
Satan is a deceiver and for every truth in the Bible, he has a mirror opposite.
Just take a look at the first couple, Adam and Eve. God had created them and placed them in the most lavish garden on earth. He told them they were free to eat from any tree except for the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Gen 2: 16 – 17) located in the center of the garden. Satan comes on the scene and makes Adam and Eve doubt what God had told them “Did God say not to eat from any tree in the garden?” (Gen 3:1)
Eve replied with what God had said and Satan turned it all around by making God out to be strict and stingy not wanting them to share in His knowledge of good and evil. We all know what happened after that right? Eve believed the lie and Satan has been wreaking havoc on God’s children ever since.
That’s why Paul encourages us to stand firm. He understood that the struggle Christians face would not be again flesh and blood. It is against Satan (the master deceiver) and his band of fallen angels (demons). There is a battle being fought for your soul. The closer you get to Christ and living a life in Him, the more Satan will try to trip you up. It is our job to be aware of his tricks and fight with God’s strength by “hiding His Word” in our hearts (Psalm 119:11).
We also have to remember that we will never have to fight the battle alone. “In this world you will have troubles,” Jesus told his disciples, “but take heart, I have overcome the world!” Isn’t this encouraging news?

I know that if I look at the battles I face from where God is sitting  I can withstand anything because:
      • When Satan stirs up thoughts of my past I know I am a new creation in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17)
      • I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength (Phil 4:13)
      • If I come near to Christ, He will come near to me (James 4:8)
Today, may I encourage you to read Psalm 121 and find confidence in Christ by claiming these words as your own.
I lift up my eyes to the hills, where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let my foot slip, He who watches over me will not slumber; indeed, He who watches over me will neither slumber nor sleep.  The LORD watches over me, the LORD is my shade at my right hand; the sun will not harm me by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep me from all harm He will watch over my life; the LORD will watch over my coming and going both now and forevermore.
