    • The difference between dogs and ants

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on September 8, 2017

Proverbs 6:9 (NCV) How long will you lie there, you lazy person? When will you get up from sleeping?

Proverbs 13:4 (HCSB) The slacker craves, yet has nothing, but the diligent is fully satisfied.

I know beyond a shadow of a doubt God has called me to reach others through my writing. It has been confirmed by many trusted friends and can I see the fruit God produces when I’m obedient to Him and use the writing talents He’s given me. So what causes me to get “lazy” in using my gifts? Sometimes, when I have the opportunity to write it seems that there is always either something else to do or, I just want to plop in front of the TV and play that old familiar game of “channel surfing.”  Each time something like this happens, I feel the nudge of the Holy Spirit encouraging me to get up and write or tweak something. Sometimes, I’m sad to say…I sit and wallow in my laziness.

This morning during my quiet time, I read Proverbs chapter 6. While reading, the Holy Spirit drew my attention to verses 6 – 11. These verses talk about the diligent ant. Have you ever watched ants? They are constantly working to prepare for the winter months. Unlike my dogs who think it’s their duty to lay belly-side up basking in the warmth of the sun shining through the window of my family room, ants never stop. As I thought about this, I realized that at times I am just like my dogs… lazy. So, like my dogs, when I settle into “basking” in the warm sun I’m being disobedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

      UGH! That stings!

Continuing to read Proverbs and the accompanying notes, I was encouraged by what I found. In verse 6 the writer challenges us to take a lesson from the ants. If I learn or consider their ways I will become wise. I thought about the ants this morning and realized that God has called me, all of us actually, to be more like the ants instead of my lazy old dogs. I began to cross-reference scriptures throughout the book of Proverbs and noticed the contrast between diligence and laziness. I’d like to share with you what I found:

      The Diligent
      The Lazy
      Scripture reference
Become rich (not necessarily monetary wealth)
      Are soon poor
      Proverbs 10:4
      Have abundance
      Chase fantasies
      Proverbs 12:11
      Will be leaders
      Will never succeed
      Proverbs 12:24
      Reap prosperity through hard work
      Experience poverty because of laziness
      Proverbs 28:19

I can see each of these contrasts as they play out in my life and the life of others I know. There is one other contrast I came across that really hit me; it’s from Proverbs 13:4

“The slacker craves, yet has nothing, but the diligent is fully satisfied.”

At times, I’ve been a slacker as far as my writing is concerned. I have allowed “stuff” to get in the way of what I know I should be doing. Although I “crave” to be all I can be through my writing, I am not fully satisfied. This verse in Proverbs was a huge eye-opener for me this morning. I want to be fully satisfied and have all God has promised me. But, I will never get there if I’m a slacker.

It was time for me to repent. As I prayed a prayer of repentance for my laziness, I asked God to also restore the places inside me that I had allowed the enemy to destroy. I want to be wise with the time God has given me. Therefore, I am committed to following the way of the ants, and as I do, I know I will have the abundance God promises those whom are diligent.

    • How is raising kiddos like football?

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on September 7, 2017

Deuteronomy 6: 5 – 9 (MSG) “Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love him with all you’ve got! Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates.”

My son has always been an animated storyteller. Since he was old enough to talk he’d wake up in the morning chattering away and not stop really until he drifted off to the adventures that awaited him in his nightly dreams.  I remember his confidence and boldness showing at a very early age. It was his first day of kindergarten. On the drive to school he decided that he was no longer “Mommy’s baby” he was a big “Kindergartner.” He confidently exclaimed “Mom, I’m not your baby anymore. I am a kinder-gar-den-er and you know that I am much bigger than a baby.” He was so sure of himself, an assurance I hadn’t seen in him until that day.

Like most other mothers I know, I had to choke back tears as a flood of emotion overwhelmed me. “See ya Mom” he boasted, tossing a little wave my way. He hopped out of the car and was off on a new adventure. As I watched him walk away, I realized that my baby boy was growing up. Where had the first five years gone? Just yesterday he was coming home from the hospital. Then it hit me, the words of Deuteronomy chapter 6 verses 5 through 9 came to life in a way they never had before. Was I training my child to love God and obey His commands?  As I drove away from the drop-off zone I prayed “Father, have I taught him to love you with all of his heart? Am I pointing to you enough to leave a lasting impression? Please help me be more proactive in showing him your love and mercy.”

In the days that followed that first day of school God revealed several things to assure me that my son was in-fact learning to hide His word in that tiny little heart of his. For example, one night while my husband and I were cleaning up from dinner, my son grabbed the pocket size Bible I usually carry in my purse and headed over to his Dad’s chair. Making himself comfortable, he opened the Bible as if he were going to begin reading. His little finger moved over the page as he recited his memory verse (Luke 11:1) “Lord, teach me to pray.” A tear ran down my face. My son hadn’t even learned how to read but in spite of that he managed to hide the truth of that verse in his heart. For me that was huge, especially since my unbelieving husband was just a few feet away. I quickly praised God for the little light that was shining through my son.

God continues to this day to use the light inside my son. What a blessing it is to be able to send our son to a school where the word of God is incorporated into the curriculum and prayer is encouraged. Through the years, my faith has been increased by seeing my son’s child-like faith in action, and I pray my husband will come to know Christ by seeing our son incorporate Godly principles into his life.

So how is raising kiddos like a football game?

Four quarters make up an entire football game. Let’s suppose that, similar to a football game, you divide the time you have raising your child (children) into four 5-year quarters. If you look back over the first five years of your child’s life, ask yourself how you are doing in “training your child in the way he or she should go.” Have you pointed him/her/them to Christ? Have you encouraged them to hide God’s word in their hearts? Have you encouraged them to pray?  Encouraging them to establish a firm foundation while they are young will help them to avoid sinking sand when they are older. God’s word promises that.

Father, I praise you today for who You are, and for the things that You are doing inside our house. Thank you for placing Godly influences in my son’s life at church and school. I pray that you will continue to guide me in training him in the way that he should go. I know he will not depart from these ways when he is older because Your word promises that. Let Your light continue to shine bright through him and me so that others may see and believe that you are God. Amen

    • Facing GIANT odds with strength and confidence

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on September 6, 2017

I’ve been thinking alot lately about the “chaos” going on in our world and in the lives of my my friends and family. Let’s just face it, the issues we face from day to day can be down-right tough and can leave us overwhelmed by what seem to be “impossible odds.” Wouldn’t you agree?

dont be afraid when facing giant oddsPondering “impossible odds” I thought about the time David stood up to Goliath. If ever there was a story about strength and courage while standing before “impossible odds” it’s this one. David’s encounter with Goliath is found in 1 Samuel 17.

The Philistine army had come out prepared to do battle against Saul and the Israelites. The Philistines set up camp on one hill; the army of Israel on the other. For forty days Goliath, a 9 foot tall Philistine warrior taunted Saul and his men.

“Why have you taken positions for battle? I am a Philistine, and you are Saul’s servants! Choose a man and send him to fight me. If he can fight and kill me, we will be your servants. But if I can kill him, you will be our servants.” Then he said, “Today I stand and dare the army of Israel! Send one of your men to fight me!”  (1 Samuel 17: 8 – 10)

Whoa! The gauntlet was thrown. Saul and his men were afraid. In these days, armies would often avoid the high cost of battle by sending their strongest warrior to fight the strongest warrior of the other army. Saul knew if Goliath was “calling someone out” he was the tallest of the Israeli army.  He would have to be the one to face Goliath. I think I’d be sufficiently “afraid” if a 9 foot tall man dared me to a fight. Wouldn’t you?

What was Saul to do?  Enter David.

At the request of his father, David went to where his brothers were camped out with the Israeli army to give them food. It just so happened, he arrived at the exact time Goliath came out to taunt the Israelites once again. David heard Goliath’s dare and then saw the men of Israel flee in fear. Okay, stop right here. What would you do in this same situation? Look at Goliath and run? Or would you see the situation from a different perspective?

David saw the situation completely different from everyone else. He saw a man defying the living God. Knowing this man was not a man who feared the Lord, David said with boldness and confidence “I will go and fight this Philistine!” (1 Samuel 17:32)

“Huh?” Can you just imagine the silence among the men of Israel? “You? But you’re just a boy. This guy is going to rip you to shreds.”

But David’s faith in God was strong because he knew God had spared him from the paws of the bears and lions that tried to steal his sheep on countless occasions as a shepherd . He saw Goliath in the same way and knew God would protect him against this foe too.

David ignored the criticism of the crowd and stepped out knowing it wasn’t him doing the fighting…it was the almighty God of Israel. Sling in one hand stone in another, David quickly loaded the stone and chucked it at Goliath. Ok, I have to admit that this is the place in the scene where I would typically throw my hands up over my eyes and not watch what was going to happen next for fear the “good guy” was going to get squashed like a bug. I guess it’s just the girl in me. The stone landed in the middle of Goliath’s forehead. God used one confident heart and one smooth stone to knock the giant off of his feet and send the Philistine army packing.

Isn’t it amazing how God can use the youngest, weakest, and/or smallest to accomplish His purposes? Even when the odds look impossible, God is at work to show us anything is possible (Luke 1:37) when we trust and choose to allow Him to fight for us.

What “impossible” odds are you facing in your life?

      ·         Job loss
      ·         Cheating spouse
      ·         Financial issues
      ·         Behavioral issues with your children
      ·         Poor choices
      ·         Sexual Sin/Pornography/Lust
      ·         Addiction
      ·         Depression
      ·         Divorce
      ·         Death of a loved one

      ·         Incurable disease

Whatever it is, our God is stronger, bigger, and higher than any “giant” we will ever face. May I encourage you today to surround yourself with people who will pray with you, provide Godly wisdom, support you, encourage  you, show you the love of Christ and the truth and promises of God’s word.

Remember, you are not facing “impossible odds” by yourself….GOD…the same God who shaped the earth, hung the stars, led Israel through the desert, and formed you in your mother’s womb….is with you.

Deuteronomy 31:6 (NCV) Be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid of “the giants in your life” [paraphrase mine] because the Lord your God will go with you. He will not leave you or forget you.
