    • I’m craving eternity!

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on September 15, 2017

Ecclesiastes 3:11 (GW) It is beautiful how God has done everything at the right time. He has put a sense of eternity in people’s minds. Yet, mortals still can’t grasp what God is doing from the beginning to the end of time.

Have you ever really “craved” something? You know what I’m talking about right? You want something and the craving is so intense yet, you just can’t put your finger on what it you want. Perhaps it’s a food craving? My husband and I go through this around mid-day when we’re trying to figure out what we’re going to do for dinner. Perhaps you have the same conversation with your spouse…it goes something like this:

(your spouse calls you from the office) Spouse: Hi hon. What were you planning on making for dinner tonight?

You: I’m not sure. What are you craving tonight?

Spouse: I don’t know…something. I just don’t want the same ol’ thing we have every week. We need something (slight pause in his voice) different.

You: Different. Okay (that was a big help you think to yourself) like what?

Spouse: I don’t know. I just want something different.

So there it is. We both have a craving for something but have no clue how to “satisfy” that craving. Are we craving a salad, pasta, red meat, chicken, potato and ham casserole loaded with lots and lots of melted cheese , or perhaps something with loads of melted cheese? (Hey, I might be on to something here.) Some days we go round and round. Sometimes the cravings are satisfied and sometimes they’re not.

Maybe it’s not a dinner craving for you. Maybe you’ve gone through life craving something “more” and in your quest to fill the void you’ve fallen into an addiction to gambling, shopping,  porn, infidelity, alcohol or drugs.

Maybe you go from relationship to relationship trying to find that “perfect” someone who fill your deepest longing. But the truth is, I bet you’ve never found the “one” who can fill that deep dark longing because wasn’t there was just that one thing about them that wasn’t right?

The truth is we will NEVER be satisfied this side of heaven because God has put “eternity in our minds.” Absolutely nothing on this earth, pleasure or pursuit, will ever truly satisfy our deepest craving.

Why, you ask? The answer is found in the very first chapter of Genesis. Genesis 1:26 (NCV) “Let us make human beings in our image and likeness (emphasis mine).” We were created in the image and likeness of God. Because of this, we have a spiritual thirst (craving). Nothing but an eternal God can satisfy this thirst. A sense of eternity has been placed in our hearts. To enter into God’s perfect heaven we must confess our sin and recognize our need for a Savior. God wants all of us to spend eternity with Him. John 3:16 (GW) confirms this truth:

God loved the world this way: He gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life. (emphasis mine)

If you have not yet accepted Christ as your Savior, I encourage you to settle this issue in your heart today (see prayer below). Only Christ can satisfy our deepest craving.

God, I know you’ve given me a craving for eternity that only you can fill. I realize now that I’ve sinned and have not lived a life that pleases you. Will you forgive my sin and give me a fresh start today? Jesus I believe you died and paid the penalty for my sin so that I can live with you forever. Come into my heart today and be Lord of my life. Thank you, Lord, for giving me new life in you. In the days ahead, help me to know and grow in you. Place people in my life who will continue to point me to you. Thank you in advance for things that you’re going to do in me and through me. In Jesus name I pray. Amen

    • “Sandy” Encounters

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on September 14, 2017
John 8: 3 – 6 (MSG) The religion scholars and Pharisees led in a woman who had been caught in an act of adultery. They stood her in plain sight of everyone and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught red-handed in the act of adultery. Moses, in the Law, gives orders to stone such persons. What do you say?” They were trying to trap him into saying something incriminating so they could bring charges against him.

John opens the 8th chapter of his gospel with a very personal encounter Jesus had with a woman caught in the act of adultery. This woman had been taken to Jesus by the Pharisees who were trying to trick Jesus.

“This woman was caught in bed with a man that is not her husband. The Law of Moses says that we should stone her. What do you say?” (v 4 – 5) Instead of responding, Jesus knelt down beside the woman and began to write in the sand.

Try and just put yourself at the scene? There the woman stood, ripped out of the bed of a man that wasn’t her husband. She had broken the law. She was a sinner and on display for her community to see. Her very private mistake had suddenly became a public spectacle.

Have you ever wondered what was going through her mind in this moment? Can you hear her gut wrenching sobs? We really don’t know much about this woman at all, only that she was caught in the act of sin.

I have often wondered if she had heard all the buzz about Jesus and the miracles he was performing all over town? Had she listened to any of the stories the other ladies were telling at the well as they gathered water? If she had, I wonder if the question “What if everything I’ve heard about Jesus is true?” ran through her mind during this time she stood in “bare” humiliation.

You have to imagine that she was beating herself up for the mistake she made. She was probably afraid of this angry mob and trying to find the strength to face whatever was going to happen next. There she stood next to Jesus, totally exposed, wondering “could this be the Teacher that has performed miracles??? There is something different about him. I know he can help me.”

The second part of this story that fascinates me is the way that Jesus is just calmly writing in the sand awhile the Pharisees throw out their questions.  After they finish, Jesus stands and addresses the crowd “Anyone here who has never sinned can cast the first stone at her.”  He calmly returns to his sand writing.

Have you every wondered what he was writing? Perhaps it was something like “Judge not lest ye be judged” or “Fear not for I am with you.” Perhaps it was a list of every sin committed by every Pharisee pointing an accusing finger.  The Bible doesn’t tell us. I just can’t help but wonder.

But do you see what’s going on? The words Jesus spoke were powerful. Not a word was spoken after Jesus knelt back down to write.  But can you just imagine what was going through the minds of the men who stood there. “How can I throw this stone knowing what I’ve done?”

      THUD.

The quietness now broken by the sound of a single stone hitting the ground. In the midst of the stillness the woman hears motion – but it wasn’t what she originally anticipated. The tension dissolves by the dropping of stones and the shuffling of feet.

When the last accuser exited,  Jesus stood up and spoke to the woman. “What? No one found you guilty?”

“No one, Lord.” (some translations say Master) She addressed Jesus as Lord. She realized who He was. In that moment perhaps she made Jesus the Lord of her life.

With love in his eyes and kindness in his voice “I also don’t judge you guilty. You may go now, leave your life of sin.” Can you imagine what was going through the woman’s mind? In that moment, what would you have thought? I can only imagine the freedom and love she felt. It had to have been one of those goose bump moments.

Praise God we are all forgiven. Just as this woman left her life of sin, we must also leave ours and relentlessly follow the One who paid the price. Whatever sin you have in your life, surrender it to Jesus – leave it at the foot of the cross and walk away.

Perhaps the words in the sand that day were “Not guilty.” or “You are forgiven?” or “I know what you’ve done and it doesn’t matter. I forgive you and I love you?”

    • Who do you run to?

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on September 13, 2017

In the opening verses of Psalm 7, David is writing in response to being falsely accused of trying to kill King Saul and seize the throne for himself (read about this story in 1 Samuel 24:9-11). David knows the accusations are not true. It is mere slander directed at him. But take a look at how he decides to handle his current circumstances. David is stirred with emotion as he cries out to God here in Psalm 7:1-8 (MSG):

“God! God! I am running to you for dear life (emphasis mine); the chase is wild. If they catch me, I’m finished (emphasis mine): ripped to shreds by foes fierce as lions, dragged into the forest and left unlooked for, unremembered. God, if I’ve done what they say betrayed my friends, ripped off my enemies. If my hands are really that dirty, let them get me, walk all over me, leave me flat on my face in the dirt. Stand up, God; pit your holy fury against my furious enemies. Wake up, God. My accusers have packed the courtroom; it’s judgment time. Take your place on the bench (emphasis mine), reach for your gavel, throw out the false charges against me. I’m ready, confident (emphasis mine) in your verdict: “Innocent.””

The Message paraphrase says it all doesn’t it? How many times have you felt like you have “run for dear life” from situations that are going on in your life? I sure can name a few. But look what David does. He doesn’t take matters into his own hands when he’s falsely accused. He realizes who has the final say and submits the issue to God right off the bat as if to say “Here God. This is my problem and it’s bigger than me. I didn’t do anything wrong but if I did let me know and I will pay the consequences. If not, I know you will judge me as…Innocent.”

Awesome isn’t it. He knows what happened and will judge me accordingly. I know I’ve been falsely accused of a few things by so called friends. The things they accused me of never happened. My name was thrown around at backyard cookouts and other social gatherings like I was the bad guy. As the rumor-mill began to churn, I admit I allowed things like anxiety and anger to build up inside. I held onto these things and then allowed myself to get “bogged” down in worthless chatter with other people. What I failed to do was run to God when I was first falsely accused. He would have given me strength to face my accuser, the words to say (if any) and the courage to listen the truth instead of the lies being spewed.

Praise God it’s never too late to start over with God. He gives us second, third, fourth even forty-fourth chances. Have you ever been falsely accused of something? Did you turn everything over to God and let him handle it or did you try to take matters into you own hands?

The next time you’re falsely accused, give it to God – He is the only perfect judge and He will get you through to the other side.
