    • When I’m chained…things get worse

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on October 10, 2017

Philippians 4:19 “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”

I have found such encouragement in the last chapter of Philippians. Each time I read it, I am reminded not to let the worries of this world get me down because God is near (Philippians 4:5). He hasn’t left my side. When I feel overwhelmed, I know I should pray about everything (Phil. 4:6) and offer thanks, then the peace that surpasses all understanding will guard my heart.

The crazy thing about all of this is that…I know that I know this, but sometimes the journey from what I know to what I do, takes on a life of its own.

      Have you ever been there?

When I don’t pray, I stew. When I stew, things get worse and I keep EVERYTHING…the bitterness, anger, jealousy, envy…EVERYTHING held inside. I tend to worry more and there is no peace, in fact, I tend to be more negative in those times thinking things will NEVER change.

Take a look at what I’m focused on during those time…it’s not Jesus is it? NOPE…  I’m completely focusing too much on my circumstances.

Look at Paul, he has every right to be miserable in his circumstances, he’s in prison. Yet, he’s not bitter or angry. He is full of joy and completely content in the midst of his circumstances. The difference between me and Paul is he turned his worries into prayers. He prayed more and worried less. I, on the other hand, tend to be just the opposite. I am famous for worrying more and praying way less than I should. Sometimes the most I can muster is “God help me, and help them too!”

Are you content with your life? Do you feel like you have tried to give your worries to God a thousand times only to take them back and worry about them more and more? I know I have? Thousands of times I’ve said “Starting today, I resolve to give ALL worries to you Lord.” I’ve felt confident walking ways knowing that I had laid everything down at the cross of Jesus. Then, something happens and I the worrying process begins all over again just as if I had never laid anything down at all.

It’s tiring if you actually sit back and think about it, isn’t it?

Praise God that He is the God of second, third, fourth…thousandth chances right? I know it gets easier. It’s just making the conscience effort to keep laying worries (burdens, heartaches, sorrows…anything) down at the foot of the cross every time I feel myself picking them back up again. So, until I feel a peace about whatever it is I’m worrying about…my mantra will be “Jesus I know I can do (endure) all things through you because you will give me strength.” (Phil. 4:13 – paraphrase mine)

So, what if you’re not worried about anything but you just feel like you’re not loved, or cared for, or your needs aren’t being met? Paul assures us in verse 19 that “the same God who takes care of me (Paul) will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.” See! We can trust Christ to meet all of our needs.

Feel like no one cares? God cares for you! 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because he cares for you.”

Don’t feel like you have the strength to make it through another day? Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Are you afraid? 1 John 17 – 18 “God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. This way, love has the run of the house, becomes at home and mature in us, so that we’re free of worry on Judgment Day—our standing in the world is identical with Christ’s. There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear. Since fear is crippling, a fearful life—fear of death, fear of judgment—is one not yet fully formed in love.

Are you lonely? Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you for forsake you.

Feel unloved? John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believed in him would not perish but have eternal life.”

Whatever it is you are struggling with, God can handle it…cast your cares on Him. His burden is easy and his yoke is light.

Are you depressed? Isaiah 40:31 “but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

He is enough and can handle your greatest pain. Lay it down at his feet and watch him bring wholeness and joy back to the broken pieces of your life.

    • Are you living the plan?

Posted at 8:30 am by sneuhofer, on October 9, 2017

Ephesians 1: 4-10 (NCV) “…in Christ, He (God) chose us before the world was made so that we would be His holy people—people without blame before Him. Because of His love, God had already decided to make us His own children through Jesus Christ. That was what He wanted and what pleased Him, and it brings praise to God because of His wonderful grace. God gave that grace to us freely, in Christ, the One He loves. In Christ we are set free by the blood of His death, and so we have forgiveness of sins. How rich is God’s grace, which He has given to us so fully and freely. God, with full wisdom and understanding, let us know His secret purpose. This was what God wanted, and He planned to do it through Christ. His goal was to carry out His plan, when the right time came, that all things in heaven and on earth would be joined together in Christ as the head.”

Even before the world was formed, we were a part of God’s plan. He saw each hurt, hang-up, and tear that would and will ever fall from our eyes. He showers our lives with grace and mercy, makes us his children, and wraps us in his loving arms all made possible through the loving sacrifice of His one and only son (John 3:16) Jesus Christ long before we were born.

      Why?

Because our God is a relational God; he wants to be in relationship with us. Yes! God, who spoke and the world and everything in it was, the Maker of heaven and earth DESIRES a personal relationship with me. He wants me to know how much He loves me and He wants me to respond to that love by accepting it and not taking it for granted. He wants the same exact thing for you too.

Isn’t that comforting? I know this concept may be hard to wrap your brain around because of the things you may have been through in your life…but it’s the truth.

      He loves me.

      He love you.

      He values me.

      He values you.

I am accepted by the God of the universe…and so are you! How cool is that?

The God that set the stars in place has a plan and a purpose for our lives and calls us his own.

WOW!  I matter to God…and so do you!

When we come to the saving knowledge of Christ, we are given the Holy Spirit who lives inside us (Ephesians 1:14). As we begin to know and grow in Christ, the Holy Spirit will guide, provide for, correct, and protect us. With the Holy Spirit at work, we continue to grow in grace and knowledge with the same power that was used to raise Christ from the dead. With this power inside us, we can accomplish the plans and purposes God put us on this earth to do – all for His honor and glory.

Father, I know I blow it…ALOT…but I want my life to bring praise, honor and glory to you my Lord and Savior. Thank you for loving me and accepting me even when I am difficult and unlovable. Help me to listen to and be guided by your Holy Spirit as I walk through this day, for it’s in your Son’s name I pray. Amen.

    • Shielded from the rain

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on October 6, 2017

Psalm 28:7 (AMP) “The Lord is my Strength and my [impenetrable] Shield; my heart trusts in, relies on, and confidently leans on Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song will I praise Him.

I love listening to the rain as it falls. No matter where I am, at home or in my car the raindrops have this way of calming me down. One morning I had to drive down to North Carolina for a meeting. About 30 minutes into this hour long trip, I drove into a pretty treacherous downpour of rain. It was raining so hard I could barely see the car in front of me or any part of the road  ahead. As I drove through the rain, I realized that my car was a “shield” from the rain much like God is my impenetrable shield from the storms of life.

In the near distance, I was able to make out an overpass. As I passed under, I noticed a motorcyclist frantically trying to put on his rain gear to offer some sort “protection” from the rain. The poor guy was already soaked to the bone.

I couldn’t help but make the analogy to those who don’t know Christ when they are going through storms of life. Where do they turn for strength? Who shields them? Who do they rely on? That day I was protected from the circumstances surrounding me by my car. Even though driving through the downpour made me nervous because I couldn’t see what was going on in the distance, I was still safe from the rain. They guy on the motorcycle didn’t have that security. He was doing all he could do to protect himself but he was still exposed to the elements.

The closer I walk with Christ the more I rely on Him to get through every season of my life. There isn’t anything I don’t talk to Him about. I let Him do the heavy lifting in my life because I know His word has promised me “His yoke is easy and His burden is light.” (Matthew 11:30). I know I can lean on Him and He will help me. God really does want us to come to Him and lay EVERYTHING at His feet. He wants us to confidently lean on Him.

Today, what is it that you need to lay down at His feet and rely on Him to be your shield?

Psalm 119:114 (NIV) You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
