    • Trusting God in “reed” moments

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on October 13, 2017

Psalm 25:1 (NIV) “In you, Lord my God, I put my trust.”

Psalm 56:4 (NIV) “In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”

I had to ask myself a tough question as I read the words of Exodus chapter 2.  In the first few verses, the story is told of Jochebed, the mother of Moses, hiding her 3 month old son in a basket in the reeds by the riverbank. I began to ask myself questions as I read the words. Would I have the courage to do something like that? Would I trust God with my baby’s life?

Have you ever wondered why she put her son in a basket and laid him alongside a river? This happened during the time the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt (Exodus 1:8 – 14). Pharaoh was afraid of the Hebrew’s (Israelites) growing number so he commanded the mid-wives to kill all male babies birthed by the Hebrew women. The mid-wives didn’t follow Pharaoh’s order. They feared God more than Pharaoh and because of this reverential fear, the Hebrew population grew even more.

Jochebed was one of the women who gave birth to a boy during this time. She hid Moses in her home for 3 months until she could no longer hide him. Can you imagine what is going through her mind during those 3 months?  I can only dare to imagine.

I wonder what her thoughts would have been as she held him while nursing. Perhaps something like this: “My son, what a wonderful gift from God, there is no way I can let you die. There has to be a way to keep you alive. Oh God! What do I do? Where can I hide him.”

Jochebed made a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch (Exodus 2:3). She placed the child in the basket and laid him in the reeds along the riverbank of the Nile and trusted God to keep him alive. Can you just imagine the scene? Could you have watched as your baby lay in the reeds? I’m not so sure I could have done that. Jochebed sent Miriam, Moses’ sister, to stand at a distance and watch .

Now I don’t know about you…but I am pretty sure I would not have been able to go through with this plan. True, Jochebed thought this was the only possible way to keep the boy alive. But think of the risk she was taking. I’m sure there were animals by the river. When I think about that, I think about snakes. YUK. I am not a big fan of snakes. That thought just gives me the creeps. Perhaps she remembered the stories that were handed down about Abraham and Isaac. God protected Isaac, so surely God would keep her baby alive. Her courage and faith allowed God to show up in a big way. His will for Moses’s life was being set into motion in the midst of the reeds and she didn’t even realize it.

What could God’s will possibly be for Moses in this situation? I am certain Jochebed was scared and felt utterly hopeless. But she trusted God, and what she couldn’t see in that moment she trusted God to work in her current circumstance.

Soon after Jochebed placed Moses in the reeds, Pharaoh’s daughter came to the river for a bath. She noticed the basket in the reeds and ordered her maid-servant to bring it to her. When she opened it, she saw Moses. He was crying so she took pity on him. She assumed he was a Hebrew baby. Her assumptions were correct. When Miriam approached the the woman, she asked if she could go find a Hebrew woman to nurse the baby for her. Pharaoh’s daughter said “Yes” and Miriam returned to her mother and shared the good news. The woman named the boy “Moses” and hired Jochebed to nurse him. What joy Jochebed must have experienced in that moment. Her son was alive and she could raise him and be the primary influence in his life.

In the midst of horrible circumstances, Jochebed was able to take advantage of the opportunity God had given her. Jochebed’s act of courage and faith was the beginning of God’s plan to place a Hebrew in the house of Pharaoh and ultimately rescue His people from Egypt.

So what about you? When your current circumstances look bleak, do you become paralyzed by fear because the situation looks humanly impossible? Or do you, trust God to reveal His plan for that situation in His timing?

You can trust God with every little detail of your life. He will bring light out of the darkest situations if you keep your focus on Him and remember He has a plan…and He is at work in every circumstance.

    • The choice is yours

Posted at 7:45 am by sneuhofer, on October 12, 2017

Joshua 24:15 (NIV) “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

Choices… life is full of them. When you are faced with making a choice (a decision) what do you do? Do you spend time (hours, days, months, years) analyzing the pros and cons of the choice you have to make? Or are you more impulsive in your decision making? For me, it depends on the decision I have to make. I must admit that I do tend to be a bit impulsive when it comes to decisions. Let me just tell you, this characteristic has not served me well and has taken me down roads I would have never imagined being on in the first place.

There is one choice that is so important it needs to be made TODAY. Whom will you follow?  On this earth there are two powerful forces seeking to influence our choice…Satan and God.

Satan appeals to the flesh using pride and power to lure us into his “promise of pleasure.” The “pleasure” Satan “promises” may seem harmless and fun but, in the end, will lead to eternal death.

God seeks to lead us in truth and uses the motivational force of love and the promise of eternal life. The Message (MSG) paraphrase just about sums this point up for us in John 3:16-18 “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.”

Joshua’s message in Joshua 24:15 is clear, “Choose today who you will serve.” In the 24th chapter, Joshua recounted the history of God’s faithfulness to the Israelites. He reminds them of what they witnessed with their own eyes in Egypt. He also reminds them of God’s provision and protection from the time Abraham was called to “Go to a land I will show you” (Gen 12:1) and promised he would have “more descendants than he could count” (Gen 15:5) up to their departure from the bonds of slavery in Egypt.

Did you notice that he didn’t mention their sin or disobedience at all?

The same is true for us today. “God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger.” We do a good enough job of that ourselves up based on “mistakes” we’ve made. He reminds us of His love and His desire to be with us forever (see John 3:16 – 18 above). When we choose to accept Christ’s redeeming work on Calvary, our sin debt is forever cancelled and we can walk forgiven and free in God’s grace and mercy.

So today, whom will you choose to follow?

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

    • God IS Bigger

Posted at 7:45 am by sneuhofer, on October 11, 2017

Jeremiah 32:27 (NIV) “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?

In my quiet time this morning, God gently reminded me that HE IS BIGGER than any problem I have or will ever have. As I sat and thought about my own little world, I thought about all the problems that are “bigger than me.” My thoughts somehow landed on the conflict and turmoil that is going on in our nation – the demonstrations and protests over everything imaginable, the fires on the West coast, the hurricanes in the Gulf and on the East coast, the blatant and very public disrespect of our National leaders… it’s just all so overwhelming to me. I can’t even watch the news.

I thought back to September 11, 2001 when the United States faced a devastating blow. I’m sure all Americans remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news about the Twin Towers in New York. I know I sure do. I was a software applications instructor at the time and was just getting ready to go into a class.

“Did you hear? A jet just flew into the World Trade Center.”

“What?” No I hadn’t heard. I had been busy getting ready to teach.

In the next few seconds all of our office phones began to ring. You see, I live and work in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. This area is home to the world’s largest Naval Station and is home-port to the Navy’s Atlantic fleet. On a daily basis we had men and women of our armed forces in our classrooms learning to use various software programs. It seemed none of our military students were going to be able to make it to class that day. My boss rolled a TV into the center of our office and we watched the devastating events for what seemed like hours.

But you know, as devastating and as out of control as the world seems…GOD is BIGGER than all of it. His plan for all of us is unfolding. We may not see Him at work, but that doesn’t mean God is not working.

      Each day God:

      • is close to the brokenhearted, the devastated, the overwhelmed, the destitute
      •  heals the sick
      • frees/rescues His children from their strongholds (addiction, depression, infidelity…)
      • restores the ruins long devastated (Isa. 61:4)
      • is making a way in the wilderness and rivers on dry land (Isa. 43:19)

I pray you find encouragement today in whatever it is you’re facing. Always remember… GOD IS BIGGER!

Isaiah 41:13 (NCV) I am the Lord your God, who holds your right hand, and I tell you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I will help you.’
