    • Are you suited for the day?

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on April 18, 2018
A while back, I was given the opportunity to take a class on the book of Ephesians. This letter was written by Paul to strengthen the believers in Ephesus in their Christian faith. In Ephesians 5, Paul encourages us to live in the light, be like Christ, to discover and learn what pleases the Lord and then DO IT. Ok, that seems easy enough right? On the contrary, it’s not easy at all. It’s a daily commitment to be aware of His presence and to submit our own agendas to His will.

If we are to live in the light and be like Christ, there is absolutely no way humanly possible we can get there on our own. It is up to us to be mindful and on guard. Each step we take closer to Christ, the more Satan wants to destroy our lives. He will use any tactic in his arsenal to get us sidetracked and deter our focus off the things Christ has for us.

Knowing that Satan wants to destroy our lives and will do anything to make that happen, we have to be prepared to “do battle” every day. Ephesians 6., beginning in verse 10, Paul encourages us to be strong in the Lord by wearing the full armor of God. Like any soldier on the front lines of a war, we also must put on this armor every single day. The armor of God will help us fight against Satan and his evil tricks (v.11).

Go with me for just a minute to tomorrow morning. Are you ready? Consider this scenario. When the alarm clock goes off, turn it off of course, and go through this little exercise. Pretend that you are preparing for the “battle” of the day. I realize this may not be a stretch for some of you – especially those who have been jolted out of bed by the cries of a hungry baby and not the soothing buzz of an alarm clock…but stay with me. Envision yourself putting the belt of truth around your waist and the protection of right living on your chest (v.14).

What is the belt of truth you ask? It’s the word of God and must be the standard by which we live our lives. Everything we do, everything we say, and every thought we have needs to be aligned with the truth of God’s word. People are watching you and Satan would like nothing more than to trip you up. It is important to know the truth of God’s word and then live it out or clothe ourselves with its protection for the day ahead.

Next, we put on the good news of peace to help us stand strong (v 15). This is the gospel of Jesus Christ. He died so that we could live abundant lives. This good news brings peace because we know our future is secure. We continue putting on the armor by taking the shield of faith. We must ask the Lord to release the gift of faith in us so that we are able to stand firm. Imagine yourself putting on the helmet of salvation. We must remember that our own future is secure because of Christ’s redeeming work on Calvary. He paid the price – our home is in heaven. Then lastly, pick up the sword of the spirit, with is the word of God.

With this armor securely in place we’re now ready to take on the day. How do you look? I bet you look great! Are you ready to face anything Satan throws at you? Did you notice how important it was to clothe yourself with the truth and fight with the sword of the spirit? That means we must know what God’s word says and apply it to our daily lives. We have to be aware of the “things” that can easily “entangle” us so that we can slash through them with the truth.

While this armor that we’ve just put on is great protection, we also need one more thing. We must pray, and when we think we’ve prayed enough – pray even more! Nothing is too small to pray about. In fact we should replace worry with prayer (Phil. 4:6-7), pray in faith (James 1:6) and then praise God whether he answers our prayers or not (Psalm 105:1-4).

Are you ready to stand firm? My I encourage you today to be diligent in your fight against Satan and his schemes. Remember you’re not alone. God is with you. You have the power of the Holy Spirit living in you.

Have a great day today and be confident knowing you’re protected by the armor of God!

    • Did you hear that? Someone’s knocking…

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on April 17, 2018

Psalm 16:5 (NCV) “the Lord is all I need. He takes care of me.”

A few years back I spent a great deal of time thinking about needs vs. wants. What is it I really need? When I identified something, I’d ask, “do I need this or is it just a want?” Have you ever found yourself wrestling with a question like this? As I pondered the difference, I found myself stopping dead in my tracks after reading Psalm 16, verse 5. My mind went back to the first time I visited the church I currently attend. As a child, I was raised in a Christian home and was in church every time the doors were opened…which usually meant Sunday mornings and evenings, and Wednesday nights. By the time I had reached my teens I stopped going to church on a regular basis and became a “C & E” Christian, attending church on Christmas and Easter ONLY.

I can remember the day I visited the church as an adult as if it were yesterday. The night before, my Dad called to invite me to the service. I’m not sure how many times they asked me to come and check it out but this time, I felt I just had to be there. At this time in my life I hadn’t been in or near a church since I had gotten married some years earlier. The relationship that I enjoyed with Christ when I was younger had become very distant. Throughout my childhood and into my early teens, I was very diligent about my relationship with Jesus. Reading my Bible and setting aside time to pray was a normal part of my everyday routine. In fact, it was a family thing. My parents, my sister and I would sit around the kitchen table reading and discussing the Bible. I fell out of the routine through my teens, twenties and into my thirties. The influences of the world caught my attention and led me on a path far away from the closeness I felt with Christ.

By the time I hit my thirties there was a huge God-shaped void in my life. I had tried to fill it with almost EVERYTHING this world had to offer. But I still felt empty, unsatisfied, restless. I knew something was missing. Little did I know it was the gentle knock of Christ calling me to come back to Him. He is what I needed to fill the empty places in my life and make me whole again. That Sunday morning as the worship team sang, I felt a warmth that I hadn’t felt in so long. It was Christ wrapping me in His sweet embrace letting me know He was there and that He loved me even though I had ran so far away from Him. Tears began to flow uncontrollably as I continued to listen to the words of the song coming from the praise band. Breaking down a piece of the wall I had built, I allowed those words to wash over me.

“How deeply I need you my Lord…Like the morning needs the sun, I need you. Like the desert needs the rain, I need you. Like the ocean needs the streams, I need you.”

I need Christ PERIOD. He is my friend and confidant. He is the giver of everything good in my life. When I feel I can’t make it another second, He sustains me. When I feel unloved, He loves me with an everlasting love and will not leave me or forsake me.

My relationship with Christ continues to grow to this day. Each day I meet Him in the early morning hours. During that time, he fill the “holes” in my life with His love, mercy and grace.

Do you feel like something is missing in your life? Christ is knocking at the door to your heart. Will you let Him in?

    • Chains that hold me captive

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on April 13, 2018

I didn’t realize how much I had allowed the chains of unforgiveness to weave themselves so intricately around my body until I was reminded of the symptoms one Sunday morning as I sat and listened to the sermon.

“Someone does something to hurt you and you forgive them. But what happens at the very thought of the issue? Can you see them the way God sees them or are you still offended by what they have done to you?”

      “Whoa, what’s that?”

I suddenly felt the tiring weight of “unforgiveness chains” pulling me down as a name came rushing to the front of my mind.

For the next few seconds I sat in my chair flooded by waves of images in my head of ways that I had been offended by someone. I had to admit right then and there that I had carefully constructed the “unforgivenss chain” I wore around my neck. I added bitterness link after anger link at the mere thought or mention of the person’s name.

“But you don’t know what this person does and gets away with!”

From the pulpit I heard “Unforgiveness is like lighting yourself on fire and hoping the other person dies of smoke inhalation.”

      “Humm.”

I nervously shifted in my seat and finally there was illumination. I had allowed Satan to hold me in bondage. His weapon of choice? Unforgiveness, bitterness, and anger. As the pastor continued to preach I thought about how the “unforgiveness chain” originally got its start. I was highly offended by someone’s treatment of me and others. I said something and asked for forgiveness, but the words were not heartfelt. I really didn’t mean what I said at all; I was merely going through the motions. Satan had his first link and was able to quickly add others by keeping those offenses at the forefront of my mind.  At the time, I was fighting a losing battle because I had forgiven in my own strength.  Needless to say, I was going nowhere fast. The more this person got away with, the more bitter I became adding another link to the unforgiveness chain. I was even allowed myself to be offended at something that didn’t even pertain to me in most cases. With each thought I saw clearly another link in the long chain currently holding me captive. At this point I knew exactly what I needed to do to be free.

As I continued to listen to the pastor, I was reminded that if I was going to win a fight against Satan, I had to use God’s weapons. I can’t do anything on my own, but by the power of the Holy Spirit I can forgive. I can conquer unforgiveness by choosing to forgive. Before I left the church that morning I chose to forgive. I had allowed the chains of unforgiveness to weigh me down for far too long. Now as I move forward, I will keep my eyes focused clearly on Christ and pray – not just for me but for the other person too.

I encourage you today to forgive as Christ forgave. If He can forgive us for what sent Him to the cross (our sin), then we can forgive someone for what they’ve done to us.

      Matthew 18: 32 – 35 (NCV) – The Unforgiving Servant

“Then the master called his servant in and said, ‘You evil servant! Because you begged me to forget what you owed, I told you that you did not have to pay anything. You should have showed mercy to that other servant, just as I showed mercy to you.’ The master was very angry and put the servant in prison to be punished until he could pay everything he owed. “This king did what my heavenly Father will do to you if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”
