    • The Thick of the Fight

Posted at 7:55 am by sneuhofer, on July 19, 2018

Ephesians 6:10 – 18 (MSG) And that about wraps it up. God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels. Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.

We commit to living our lives for Christ; to take off the old self and put on the new (2 Corinthians 5:17), to do things that please and bring honor and glory to Him. So why do we feel so beat up and deflated sometimes?  Why are we living in all this chaos and heartache? Why does it seem like things… life changing, tough things… keep getting piled on top of us?

One reason… Satan and his minions have to work over-time to distract us from our lives in Christ. He is so angry that the more we know and grow in Christ, the closer we get to Him. When we take a step closer and say “Yes!” to Christ, Satan’s blood boils! He hates us even more. In Christ, we are a force with which to be reckoned… and Satan knows it.

We have been given the weapons to defeat Satan, our adversary.  But how well do we use them? I know for me sometimes, it’s so easy to take my eyes off of Christ and not use the weapons I’ve been given as a child of God when chaos begins to brew. Instead of focusing on Christ and relying on the armor of God, I tend to focus on the unpleasantness of the situation… anyone with me?

Last night I was given a good visual reminder of using the armor of God during the thick of the fight. It involved the shield of faith. When I think about a shield, I think about the Roman soldiers and the shield they carried into battle. This shield covered most of the front of their body. When the soldiers would come under direct attack, they would lock their shields together for even greater protection. There was safety behind the line of connected shields.

This concept is just as true for us today. Going back to last night, a friend of mine had to have a very hard discussion with someone. She was going to have to take a HUGE step of faith and leave everything she knew to be comfortable and step out into the unknown. She was so afraid. She sent a quick group text and asked us all to pray. I thought back to the soldiers with their locked shields and saw an image of each person in that group chat standing strong and praying for our sister in need.

It’s so important for us to be in community with a group of like-minded people. We do not have to walk through these battles alone. With Christ as our leader and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we too can band together as brothers and sisters in Christ with our shields of faith locked together and protect ourselves from Satan’s fiery arrows.

Do you have Godly friends that will stand with you in the thick of the fight? If not, I encourage you to find a group of people who will love and encourage you, pray with you, and hold you accountable. You don’t have to fight the battles of life alone.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NIV) By yourself you’re unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn’t easily snapped.

Ephesians 6:16 (NIV) In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

    • Walk!

Posted at 7:00 am by sneuhofer, on July 18, 2018
One of the things I’m learning as I read through the gospels (Mathew, Mark, Luke and John) is how Jesus interacted with people while he was here on earth. For example: In John’s gospel, we see Jesus as he meets the needs of people where they are. In John 5, Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem for a special feast. The Bible doesn’t tell us that it was necessary to take the route around the pool of Bethesda in order to get to the fest but that is the route he and his disciples had chosen to take. Near the pool were five covered porches where sick people were lying.

In John 5:5 we read that there was a man who had been sick and lain under the cover of one of those porches for 38 years. Can you just  imagine? The Bible doesn’t tell us what his illness was. But can you see the struggle of this man? He wanted to get into the pool but there were others who beat him to the punch. This man had to be tired and worn down by his illness. Jesus saw his struggle and asked “do you want to be well?” SIDEBAR HERE: I know if I had been sick for 38 years I would have probably been a puddle of tears trying to get the word “YES” out. But this man said “there is no one to help me get in the pool.” My human response to that is “what?!?”

Someone asks you if you want to be well and all you come back with is “I just want to get in the pool.” I didn’t really understand the man’s response at all. Maybe it’s because he had been sick and overlooked/outcast for so long the thought of being “well” was a mere pipe dream; something too good to be true.

In an instant Jesus changed this man’s life forever. “Stand up. Pick up your mat and walk.” I don’t know about you, but have you ever put yourself there at the scene? Would you have thought Jesus was for real? What do you think your response may have been? Perhaps something like:

“Come again? You want me to just get up? Ummm, I’ve been lying here for 38 years!”

Can you hear that inner voice?

Scripture says that IMMEDIATELY the man was well and he picked up his mat and began to walk. Whoa! This man acted WITHOUT HESITATION and was made whole. Did you notice that this guy knew something miraculous had just happened and he acted immediately? He didn’t second guess what had happened; he was well for the first time in 38 years.

Jesus met the needs of many people when he walked this earth. Everything he did was to give us an example of how we should live and walk through our lives.

Even today, He can meet the needs in our lives. Pick up your mats and walk! He doesn’t want us paralyzed by our doubt and fear. He wants us to be free to live the abundant life He has given us to live.

If you are struggling to “pick up your mat and walk” I encourage you to find a Christian friend or mentor you can share your burden with and pray for healing in this area of your life. Jesus will meet us where we are when we call on His name.

Don’t need healing in a specific area at the moment? Are you helping to meet the needs of those people in your community? Can you see where Jesus is working? The needs around us are great. When given an opportunity consider doing something to meet a need for someone in your community. Jesus came to serve; so it is up to us to be his hands and feet and serve as he did. Who knows, you just may point someone to Jesus in the process.

    • Developing a fruitful life

Posted at 8:45 am by sneuhofer, on July 17, 2018

Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT) But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

In the first four chapters of Galatians, Paul writes about the freedom we have when we come to Christ. It is through FAITH we are saved, not following strict laws perfectly. Christ walked a perfect, blameless life on this earth and then took all of our sin on himself to pay the penalty so we could have the freedom to live in him! When we accept him, through FAITH, we are made DEBT FREE. It is a life of FAITH we live… not a life of “law” keeping.

Throughout this journey of faith, we are guided by, and rely on, the Holy Spirit to help us navigate the uncharted waters of everyday life. As we begin to grow in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit begins to clothe us so we look more like Christ. When we incorporate the fruits of the spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) into our daily life we work toward being more like Christ.

On my Christian journey through the Holy Spirit’s leading, I have searched my heart to see if I am truly developing the fruits of the spirit within me. Searching myself allows me to take an honest look at each area of my life and determine what I need to change to become more like Christ.

Allow me to explain. Let’s start with the first fruit. This world would have us to believe that we must look out for number one and love ourselves. It is all about us and not about anyone else. “Love of self” is not a fruit of the Spirit – LOVE is. We must love as Christ loved. Christ loved all and served all. So to be more like Christ we have to look beyond ourselves and love…EVERYONE….yep…even the people who grate on our nerves!

As I go through the fruits of the Spirit, I find it helpful when I ask myself questions like these:

      • How am I doing with the first (second, third, etc.) fruit of the spirit?
      • Do I love like Christ loves? (this question will relate to the corresponding fruit of the Spirit)
      • Do I love the unlovable in my life? (this question will relate to the corresponding fruit of the Spirit)

What fruit can you see that needs to be built into your life? Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what the Lord is working on in you and then allow Him to be your guide through the process.

It helps to remember that developing Christ-like characteristics is a process as we walk deeper in intimacy with Christ. Our It’s a journey – not a check-the-box type thing.

My God bless you on your journey.
